9242 Rent vs Buy

Always?
For new clients no matter if you buy or rent they will both have promotions (one on the harware, one on the programming)

For existing clients the main difference is on the warranty. A rental receiver is always warrantied while a receiver that has been bought is no longer warrantied after 1 year. Other than that, no difference. The existing client that wants to add a rental unit also have to pay a tech to do it which is 75$. In the case ofan existing client adding a rental HD unit he will get 6 months of HD programming free while the client that just bought his 600$ will only get a :"Thank you for doing buisness with EV"

EAE, your info is dated. Retention offers have no contract, including the 1 year free rental.

I will read the papers I receive again... ALL RENTALS come with a 1 year contract

At the time I wrote the post, I had a bell coupon from costco that was for the deal above. Since then, I bought a tv from Sony and their current promotion is 1 free year of HD - not sure if this includes a rental or not.

I talked to a lady by phone at expressvu and she was the one that told me that the rental contract is 1 year but my programming would be 2 year contract. Possibly she didn't know what she was talking about??!! She told me to rent for 1 year, then decide if I wanted to buy or continue to rent.

schmitty338, thanks for the advice for buying but only signing 1 year contract. I am in a condo building that is only satellite serviced by a private company, so I will have to see if they can give me that deal as well.

I've been a customer of Bell for about 5 years now and my contract is up. Can I get a receiver without signing a new contract or do I have to go to a different provider? I will NOT sign my life away to Bell but in the mean time i'd like a different receiver than my less-than-terrific 6100. I'd rather not have a receiver that randomly turns off, needs to retrieve the guide every 6 minutes and one that actually outputs HD (even in HD TV, not just...the menus and EPG)

If you get through to retentions, EV/BTV might sell the 9242 for $299 net or provide a year's free rental (The one year free rental is easy to get.) The second receiver would likely be full price though. Since you are renting, there's not a lot to lose by threatening to cancel.

Bell will NOT ship you the equipment you require.
Bell will NOT get a Tech to drop it off for you.

If you want the new Dish and the rest of the equipment, you need to get it from FS, or better yet, as you are an SD customer the installation by Bell would be FREE.

They will also Upgrade all your other receivers at the same time with no cost.

A $240 savings? is only if you are going to continue to rent. If you are going to buy, you save nothing just do not have to buy for a year but you still have to buy. Again after 2 years of rental, you could almost have bought the 9242.

To each their own of course!

You can buy a new receiver without signing a new contract. BEV's being pretty generous to those out of contract these days. If you ask, they might even rent you one for one or two years free.

So is Bell selling the 9242 without the Dish and switch now? I've seen the 6141 available without it, but the 9242's I've seen are still in that BIG box.

-Mike

might sell?
Jeez. That's the price for non-customers; why wouldn't they give it to loyal clients?

I agree....if you are going to be with Bell for 2 years, definitely buy it.

I may only be with BEV for 1 year, and I still bought the 9242 for $550 including a 4 year warranty....even if I cancel my service after one year, that is only really $310 I paid for it and I could likely sell it for that much, especially with the warranty.

Expressvu's track record on how it treats existing customers is not a very nice one at all. They always make offers to bring in new customers but do not seem to give too much back for the loyalty of their existing Customer base.

It could all change in the future with the new owners, we will just have to wait and see.

All the 9242's I have seen are the standalone receivers (9242R) as opposed to the 9242S which is the System, with Dish and SW44, plus extra LNBF.

All National Installation Companies as far as I know, get the 9242R and are shipped Dish's and SW44's in bulk to use only when they are needed.

In fact that is how all receivers arrive for them.

I disagree. In the past 2 years they have certainly made improvements that I have seen and made use of to ensure existing customers are treated as well (or better) than new customers. Both are often poorly treated equally however :)

If you currently didn't had HD or Nimiq 2 channels call Bell TV. They will ask you to pay the cost of the upgrade piece (on a credit card usually) upfront and will send a tech to install the upgrade kit AND your receiver FREE OF CHARGE. Once you took some channels that required the upgrade kit (HD-AOV Movies-International-Salt&Light-ect...) Bell TV will credit the amount you paid for the upgrade piece on your BELL TV BILL, not on your credit card

I guess it is time to test the waters then. I have been with them since the start, I will call them soon and see what I can get in way of a new MPEG4 capable HD PVR.

I cannot get Rogers where I am so I cannot and will not lie to them to try to get a better deal, all I can threaten is to go to StarChoice and after spending almost $2000 on ExpressVu receivers, I doubt for a minute I would even consider that particular move.

I am sure incentives fro existing customers are better than 2 years ago, lets be honest, they could not really be much worse....lol

I am an existing sub, and I picked up the 9242 at BB and it was on in there flyer for $100 off and the salesman took another $100 off for some reason, so i ended up getting it for $399.

I already have the "upgrade kit". I subbed to Cool Jazz when it originally was aired back in 2004 (date?) It is on the 82 bird. I bought a SW44 and a Y-bracket with a 24" dish on ebay for a heck of a lot less than the $150 Bell wanted at the time.
I want the hardware included this time because I have no plans of removing my existing dish when I move in the future and I did a better job of installing it than their "professionals" could ever do. If the dish & multi-switch are supposed to be included in the price then I should be able to get them as a spare!

Hmm...I might pay them a visit then return the one I purchased a FS. FS had it listed at $599 so I PMed them and got the BB price less 10%. I didn't think that BB would drop another $100 off LOL!
