90 chevy truck and trying to put cd player in it.?

i have a 90 chevy truck and above the gas petal there is this big silver box with some small connectors in it. i am trying to put an aftermarket cd player in it and the only connector i can find is a big one like you get with the install kits but it doesnt work. how can i put the radio in the truck and where do i get the right connectors to fit in the silver box
