9 Most Racist Disney Characters

Yes, I suppose you're right. The Middle East, unlike virtually every other culture in the world, was actually less barbaric and more civilized a thousand years ago than they are now. But when Aladdin came out on home video, Disney had to change the lyrics to "Arabian Nights" to placate people who complained loud and long that their culture wasn't like that, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

The issue was that is was Disney which fantasized European feudalism over looking the barbarism of that era, and one has to ask why they didn't do the same for Aladdin.

I'm surprised that no mention of Mickey's blackface basis was even scraped upon in that article, unless I missed something.

But yeah the guys at Cracked really covered all their bases on that.

That's not the point, everytime this movie is mentioned people always overlook the reason it's racially insensitive.

Exactly, I don't see what's so good about making a fairy tale end to an era in which that would never had happened.

Any proof to that?

I think one very important event that seems to be lost in the misplaced controversy surrounding that film is that James Baskett won an Honorary Academy Award for his portrayal as Uncle Remus, making him the first African-American ever to recieve an award from the academy. It's almost certain he would have gotten starring roles in future Disney films was it not for his unfortunate passing only a few months later.

For the record, I take just about any list on Cracked.com to be tongue-in-cheek. They are ostensibly a humor site, after all, and usually succeed. This list had a lot of comic exaggeration, but I just thought it didn't succeed because it just wasn't very funny.

Are you serious? Other ethnicities do protest things that we perceive as racist. We're just ignored or dismissed, for the most part. For that matter, I think a lot of black protests get ignored or dismissed regardless of their validity.

Without looking too hard, here's the Powhatan Nation's beef with Pocohontas, which I vaguely recall at the time of the movie's release along with the complaints that they made Pocohontas into a tan skinned Barbie doll and that the movie kind of sucked.

I definitely don't think anybody's paying much attention to the Asians, either, though I freely admit personal bias on that point. Speaking personally, don't get me started on Charlie Chan, Breakfast at Tiffany's, or Hiro on what little bit I know of Heroes. I have no idea why Rob Schneider's dumbass yellowface gag in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry DIDN'T draw more protests, but that's probably because it was such a dumb and obviously offensive movie that tried replacing humor with controversy so it just wasn't worth the effort.

EDIT: One other reason why there's less protest from other groups is that we're protesting to even get in the game. Show me how many Asian people, Latino people, Native American people, or even black people are in the prime-time lineups of the major networks. We can't protest because we're not there in the first place.

Also, it's worth pointing out that Italian-American groups get very vocally cheesed off at nearly every mob movie and TV show ever made, so it's not like protesting negative ethnic stereotypes is limited to non-white people.

I can see you've never read any Sherman Alexie, whose early novels and short stories are bundles of pure, distilled anger and rage generations in the making, all wrapped up in beautiful prose. There probably is a good sense of humor in the Native American population, but it's also dark as pitch. I think that's all they have left.
