89, toyota corolla, my lights went dim...and then a bit later, came back on... alternator? battery? wire?
lights went dim, red battery light came on.... gased up, car wouldn't start, jumped, started lights got dimmer then lights came back on bright... is this the alternator telling me it is going to die, battery or loose wire...

Either the battery is going dead or the alternator is getting ready to go, get it stared and unhook the negative battery cable, if it dies it's the alternator, if not its the battery.

start your car. than disconnect the battery negitive (or positive terminal if negitive too tough to get at) terminal . if your car dies right away. its the alternator. ive taken them apart and repaired them. if you know how to take them apart. i made a homemade jig to hold it. i spun the alternator while folding a file to the armature to turn it flat to take score marks out of it. the brushes are delicate, but i held them while i recurved them to the rough shape of the armature. blow it all very good. when you reassembled it. rotate it a few times slowly so the brushes dont hang up in the groves of the armature. than try high speed. before you reinstall it, most auto parts stores will test it for you before you put it back and saving you time if it didnt work.
