82 Reception in BC: bigger BEV dishes?

For those of you who live in the Vancouver area, would you please let me know what you are getting for avg Sat 82 strength on a clear day. I am getting between 68 and 74% strength on Sat 82 on most transponders. I think I am losing signal on HD channels more often than I think should be normal. Also, if you have upgraded to a bigger dish or done something else to boost your signal I would appreciate knowing that too. Thanks for the info.
 
I run separate 24" dishes for 91 and 82 and that cured all the issues I had - signal on both sats is in the 90s all the time. Those 24" dishes are no longer available but if you go with something bigger like the 30" models sold by local FTA dealers you will be very contented. Just make sure that proper BEV LNBs fit them.
 
I would have to agree with Stampeder. After I switched to the two 24" pans, I have been virtually problem free. Like he said the 24's are hard to find, however you could make do with 30" FTA dishes, you just have to change the LNB to the proper ones.
 
I originally had a 18" pointed at 82, however constant rain fade resulted in me putting up my old 36" Starchoice dish with at Bev LNB, have not had a rain fade issue since the change.
 
Actually 24" or 60cm Dish's are the standard Dish's used for Commercial installations here in Southern Ontario, so they most certainly are still available.
 
Same here in West Van -- high 60s to low 70s -- using one standard BEV oval-shaped dish for both orbital locations.
 
About 3 years ago I had to look low and high for 24" dishes from BEV in the Vancouver area, and finally found a couple at a Bell store that didn't even have them in inventory so we had to get head office approval for me to buy them!

How do subscribers in BC in the fringe areas of 82's beam pattern get them from BEV? Add in all the rain fade we get here and the big dishes are a necessity for some folks.
 
You can upgrade to a 36" Superdish from DN for hobbyists. I bought my superdish from ebay for a bargain. Ebay has almost every dish you want to buy. Make sure toi upgrade to dishpro lnbs too if u have the time.
 
The old 24" Starchoice dish works as well.
Remove the LNB & Mount from the rectangular tube.
Re-purpose or obtain a standard legacy DirectTV style LNB.

They are interchangeable with the Bev/Dish ones and they mount right on the arm with the hole already there.

The only correction I had to make was about a 2 degree adjustment in elevation.

Can't remember if it was up or down.
Signals much stronger and way easier to peak 2 dishes than the compromise 20" dual.

Of course the larger FTA with Ku circular 11250 LNB's are even better.

Just too bad that Bev is so Eastern centric with their service.

I guess not everybody can have birds directly over the mid point in Canada for true national coverage.
 
i.e. I presume I couldn't use my DPP dual LNB with this type of dish.

If you buy a bigger dish along with a 9242 and then request a free install (to get HD), will the free installer people have any problem install the bigger dish with the LNBs from the dish that came with the 9242 to get a stronger signal?

And is installation of an oval dish any different from a circular one? (Are there any dishes between 20" and 36" that wouldn't work/should be avoided?)
 
An official Express Vu Installer is ONLY permitted to use the 20" Dish, at least here in Ontario for Residential Customers.

I am sure most would not mind pointing a 60cm or 75cm Express Vu Dish at all, it is no big issue. The problems with any other Dish, is what happens to the Technician if an Express Vu Inspector chooses that Installation as part of the audit....

It is just not worth the aggravation that would accrue if this was to happen.

I have known Technicians be suspended for far less that this.

All you can do is ask the Installer, just do not be offended if he says no.

The 20" (51cm) Dish is designed for Dual orbital reception, the bigger Express Vu Dish's are for Single orbit reception only. I have used an 85cm Starchoice Dish once, had to modify the arm but it worked pretty well.
 
Thanks for all the replies. The rain fade has become epidemic especially on the CBS HD channels.

I called Bev technical support and they want me to get a satellite reallignment. Do you think this is worth $75 or should I just go with a second dish? I called Dish Link here in Vancouver and thats the price of a reallignment. I'm thinking of trying to do a realignment myself. Any opinions are appreciated.
 
I installed two 33" dishes, one for each sat. NO rain fade, no problems at all withe the latest snow storm last weekend.
 
There you go, that is the answer.

Even 2 x 20" Dish's will be better than the one compromised Dish you have right now.
