8120 and UMA at home

Greetingings.

Have a new 8120. Don't have the unlimited calling, but do have WiFi working at home (the wifi symbol is black and I can access the web fast). There is NO cell signal (EDGE or otherwise) at my house. I have the red X in the upper right.

Tried making a call and get the "call failed" message right away. Do I need to activate UMA to be able to make a call (knowing it will use minutes) from home? If so, how do I do that?

[edit] Looks like it has something to do with Restoring from my 8100 and messing somethign up on the 8120. There BB help article telling you NOT to do it, but nothing telling you how to fix it. UMA shows up in my network connections, it just won't activate.

thanks

Well, doing the clean reinstall (and not migrating the Key Stores files that mess up UMA certificates) and switching wireless routers solved it. Looks like UMA agrees more with some routers than others. Can't get UMA to work with my SMC 2804WBR.

What is UMA? i always wondered and get confused.. i know edge is better than gprs which is the phone connectivity. (3g is better than edge)

please enlighten me and correct me if i am wrong.

You may already have done this, but don't forget to log on to T-Mobile and put in a 911 address. UMA won't work without it.

UMA, simple put, it on tmo hs. lets say your hs has no reception, "dead zone". If you have a tmo hs that is H@H (UMA) capable, then your devices connects to the wireless router (like the one you probably have in your house, or at a coffee shop) and uses the wireless connection to get reception. UMA turns the router into a mini tower at your location.

here is the office PR http://www.t-mobile.com/company/PressReleases_Article.aspx?assetName=Prs_Prs_20070627&title=T-Mobile+Introduces+Unlimited+Calling+Over+Wi-Fi+With+the+National+Launch+of+T-Mobile+HotSpot+@Home
