8100 TMO as a tethered modem

I'm trying to set up my 8100 as a tethered modem and am having problems. I tried following the how-to in the FAQ section only to find I have no idea what the Username and Password are supposed to be when I set up the dialup connection. The FAQ says input the username and password that my service provider gave me and that makes no sense. If I had an ISP I wouldn't be trying to set up a dialup connection through my phone. I'm thinking if I had the correct settings for this, I could make this work?

I have TMO and I have the $19.99/mo unlimited data plan.

Thanks for your help.

I use the username and password that is from the my.tmobile site, but you also have to make sure that you disable the modem compression protocols too.

This is starting to get ridiculous! I even tried calling 611 and even though I made sure all settings were correct, nothing happens. Its connected to DM. I get a dialog box instantly when I try dialing so something isn't right somewhere. I tried using my.tmobile username and password for the same results. I'm running out of ideas.

Try these steps. I was using my curve at the time but every thing's the same.

Thank you to everybody who's been helping thus far. Unfortunately I've not been able to get the connection set up yet, but I think the problem is the modem (my 8100).

Jonesjj, you posted this regarding modem properties...my laptop says my modem is "COM3". Does this matter? I can't for the life of me figure out where the problem in the modem settings is.

Sometimes different computers assign different com ports to the modem. Try the com 3 modem and see if it queries. You should see something like this.

ATQ0V1E0 - OK
AT+GMM - BlackBerry IP Modem
AT+FCLASS=? - COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
AT#CLS=? - COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
AT+GCI? - COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
AT+GCI=? - COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
ATI1 - Research in Motion BlackBerry IP Modem
ATI2 - Research in Motion BlackBerry IP Modem
ATI3 - Research in Motion BlackBerry IP Modem
ATI4 - Research in Motion BlackBerry IP Modem
ATI5 - Research in Motion BlackBerry IP Modem

If you do continue the steps. If you have any other problems let me know.

If anybody could try to help me here I would really appreciate it...my connection has been working fine but recently I've been getting a lot of "504" and "500" internal server errors. When that happens, I make sure I'm connected to desktop manager and keep trying until I can connect. Sometimes I need to reboot my PC and hard reset my BB. Lately, as in maybe yesterday and today, I've not been able to connect nearly as much. Often it won't get past the "dialing" stage. Sometimes it does but then gets stuck on "verifying username and password", and times out. I've learned to check "ipconfig" in DOS and how to use the "ping" command. Lately it hasn't even connected to where I can ping and get replies. Somebody who knows how to fix IP address problems may know more about this, but if you think you know what the problem is, please feel free to help. Thanks.

I can tell you one thing for sure. I had all sorts of problems with mine connecting and then stopping. The secret was in the SIM card. Even the Tmobile BlackBerry Level III guys didn't know this. Come to find out that I had an old design SIM card. I went to a TMobile store and told them that I was having problems tethering and the guy there knew exactly what the problem was. He gave me a new SIM card for free and my problems disappeared. The SIM card makes a huge difference. I would start by making sure that your SIM in the most recent design. Trust me on this one.
