Hello!

so i found a listing for a 81 Honda CB900 custom that is for sale in a price range that is some-what doable for me but i have never owned a motorcycle before and would like to know if anyone has input about this being a good/bad first bike to own? the owner lists that sat for 7 years in his garage in New England that he bought it and put some work into it. also says that it now runs great which i don't doubt. i am still worried that the bike is 28 years old. i have no clue how long a well maintain bike can last for. i am use to POS cars that are 15 years old but i know nothing about bikes.

looking for input from any one who knows anything about bikes.

THANKS!
BTW i am 6'2", will i be able to ride this comfortable?

If it sat for 7 years, most likely something was wrong with it to begin with. Youre looking at possible dried up seals in the motor and tranny along with whatever the original prob was. Unless youre handy, I'd steer clear

I had one of those for my first bike same year as well, this was in '91, great bike lots of power and good brakes, I had to get the seat recovered so I had them put an extra 1/2" of foam under it, I'm 5'11" and it was comfortable, handles well for a cruiser ( I could drag the footpeg on corners ), only problem I had in the 3 years I owned it was a coil pack, they sit above the cylinder head and when it got hot it would cause a misfire, a new one back then was about $80.00. I don't remember what it weighed but it wasn't real heavy. The other thing that they have is a 2 speed range selector in addition to the 5 gears. I don't know how common this was for bikes then and I hardly used it.

I would buy another one if it was in good shape.

Hope you get it and enjoy it.

Cruisers are comfortable for anybody, but short people find them better than sporties or enduros, but that's not to say that they don't suit taller people. But a 900 for your first bike? I wouldn't. (And I didn't). 750 Shadow would be better.
