Are there different KINDS of 8 gauge wire? I know I need 8 ga. to wire up my speakers all at 100 watts rms. I went to Menards and picked up 100 ft of 8 ga wire, and it's a lot thinner than the 8 gauge on my amp wiring kit. What's up with this?

Okay, this is what the box from Menards says: 8 GA (8.37 mm2) Strand. It's 8 AWG. 600 volts. And it actually does say "for use as appliance wiring material... But i figured 8 gauge is 8 gauge...

What do you guys think?
Ton Lock, you're right. It is composed up of solid wires. They're not as fine as normal speaker wire. It's not composed of 2 or 3, it's 13... But they're still big enough to count.
I'm sorry if I confused any of you with the lack of detail that I have. What I need the wire for is coming FROM the amp TO the speaker its self. I have a 4 gauge amp wiring kit for my amp already. There is going to be 100 watts RMS flowing through the wire, and 300 peak. I know for a fact that I need 8 gauge wire for this setup. I just need to know if I have a wrong type of 8 gauge... Walmart doesn't sell 100 foot spools of 8 gauge wire. They do, however, have the 8 gauge amp wiring kits. But I'm not in need of one of those.
MDC, that explains A LOT. Thank you. With that said, I think that this smaller 8 gauge wire - housing AC currents, as compaired to my larger 8 gauge wire - housing DC current, will be sufficient for wiring my speakers from my amp. I know 16 gauge would be sufficient, as you say. But as long as I have 8 gauge already, I'll just stick with it. It can't hurt.

Menards is cheap... I live right by one, so they probably gauged the wire with the coating on it... Not the actual copper itself... Just go to Wal-Mart and get their wiring kit, it's cheap and will do you in perfectly, with your 100 watts RMS...
