79 Dodge colt, wheel bearings or rear axle noise?

79 Dodge colt, 4 speed manual, 1.6 liter, rear wheel drive vin K. Get a loud groaning noise that gets progressively worse at about 30 mph and on up. Its continuous till slowing down again. Oil was low in the rear end, I added fresh 80-90w. I put the rear wheels on jacks and "drove" the car from 1st gear through 4th gear, and there was no noise. I got out with the car puttering along at 30mph, and listened with the wheels spinning. No noise either side. So I stopped the wheels, jacked up the front tires, felt for play, with both hands moving the wheel side to side. and there was some, but not what I would call a big deal. I tried spinning the front tires as fast as I could with my hands. and they had no noise. My next idea is to replace both front bearings, as they would be a heck of alot easier and cheaper than messing around with the axle and gears. Any thoughts?
