78 chevy truck, shortbed stepside?

hey, my grandad gave me a 78 chevy shortbed, stepside to use as my first car. it has a brand new th400 transmision, but needs a new motor, im thinking about droping a mild(300hp) 350 in it, and sujestions....ive got a year and a half before i turn 16, so ive got plenty of time
 
yeah get a motor stand which will allow you to rotate it for rebuilding, then get one from a junk yard w/low mileage there full of em' and you can get all kinds of aftermarket goodies if you wan't more hp later that 400'll take it. I'd add a pontiac 400 forged crank to begin with
