I have a 77' Yamaha XS360 with some electric start issues. I am getting spark when trying to kick start but the bike wont turn over, but it hasnt run in 4+ years.
On to the electric start problem. The main problem is the solenoid will not click, when I push the start button. So, I replaced it with a different one. The start button completes the circuit to ground but the problem is, it is grounded now, without pushing the start button. I have checked the wiring all the way to the solenoid and it is checks out fine. Also, I checked the neutral safety switch and even disconnected it, still problem persists. The other small wire coming off the solenoid (hot wire) is also referencing ground. So this means that, both wires are going to ground, but I traced it to the points, which will cause this to happen, right? When I disconnect the points, neither wire references ground.
I checked voltage at the battery, it reads 12.6 but checking voltage at the solenoid smaller terminals I am getting 10.5. This leads me to think that something is pulling down voltage somewhere in the chain. By the way, I did jump large solenoid terminals and starter motor spins. I also jumped positive battery terminal to small hot wire of solenoid coil and starer spins.
Do I have something pulling down voltage and not allowing solenoid switch to activate? Does the solenoid need 12 or more volts to activate?
Thanks!
