7290 and T-Mobile Web ($5.99)

I've been reading the forums for several days now trying all the suggestions to get my Blackberry to work with T-Mobile web. It is my understanding that it *is* possible for the phone to be used to browse the web using Opera and send instant messages with only the $5.99 data plan despite what the T-mobile CSRs, and BB specialists, tell me when I call.

First of all let me say that I don't really have a need for the Blackberry specific data add-on, I don't need email pushed to me, and I don't know anyone else with a black berry to send them PIN messages. The reason I bought a blackberry was for the full keyboard so that I could quickly type text messages as they have a greater propensity to go through when cell lines get jammed up in an emergency. My job doesn't allow for much time to use the talk portion of the phone. Plus my employer does not allow a phone with a camera on its facilities.

I guess the bottom line is $6 is a novel expense to occasionally check some email or get a map from google. For $20 it isn't worth it to me. Soooo.... for those of you who have sucessfully accessed the internet/instant messages using T-mobile web, is my phone not set up properly, or is my account not configured on T-mobile's end? Here is what I have tried/observed.

I have my APN set at wap.voicestream.com, but it ocassionally gets wiped for some reason. I have Opera Mini installed. Opera goes through the network setup but fails to find anything. Tests 7-11 state that the application has attempted to open a connection to a location inside the firewall and outside the firewall which is not allowed by your IT policy. I don't have an IT policy. This is my own personal phone, and I believe one of the things I tried was deleting the Vendor XML file to clear any restrictions that might have been placed by the former owner.

The T-Mobile supplied IM software "knows" whether or not my password is valid when I attempt to access Yahoo or MSN. i.e. if I enter the wrong password, it displays an error message. The status bar makes it to 80% when I log on and it says receiving the contact list. I then get the blue screen saying Communication error. Please try again or check you settings.

My network bar says T-mobile when I first turn the phone on. I can see the upload/download arrows in the top right hand corner and the network bar changes to Data connection refused. My Signal bar is usually full and states gprs in small letters. Initially when I plugged my sim card into the phone it said GSM. When I called the CSR rep she stated that my account was not configured for voice and that she would fix it. The signal immediatedly turned to gprs after that. I recently requested corporate pricing and changed the account from my wife's name into mine. I'm not sure how the voice configuration thing happened.

So thats my story, any suggestions?

the IT policy it is refering to is one from the previous owner, I belive the only way to get rid of this is to have the original owner have his BES push a blank IT to the device.
thats the only way I have seen.
let us know
by the way welcome to the stacks

There is a way to do it but you have to seriously hack your phone. Sorry i can't find the link yet. If i find it again i will post it.

I am new to this forum, but have looked around a fair bit for useful Blackberry hacks. There are now a lot of second user 72 series phones out there, mine is a 7290, and these are owned by people who have had little exposure to the phone or how to set it up and who purchased the phone because they are aware that it will send and receive email. For them, the main issues (touched upon in this thread) are:-

1. email has to be configired via some data service operated by blackberry for which a hack of some kind seems likely in principle, so that it could be set up free, bypassing blackberry and the service provider, T-Mobile, etc.

2. Although it doesn't say this as such, the specification could be read that there is a (dormant?) WiFi capability within the phone that could be hacked to work at a WiFi hotspot.

Does anyone know about these hacks?

i think is what you might be looking for
http://www.gruups.com/tzones/ i know the rep you also talked to probably put the voice enabler on their which would take away the data connection refused and allow you to use the t-zones and im and mms. however, i'm glad you got the data plan it is well worth the money
