70's British Horror Films

occasionally come across rips of 70's British (or in English) horror films I was completely unaware of.

They tend to be ruder, nastier or just plain bonkers

films like
Horror Hospital (Robin Askwith, great film, bonkers)
Blood Spattered Bride (Alexandra Bastedo from The Champions - Spanish film actually)
Vampyres (nasty, quite depressing really)
Killers Moon (bonkers, terrible rip)

any others i'm missing, please? Especially 70's films

Some episodes of "Thriller" were extremely scary, e.g. "Someone at the Top of the Stairs" which I remember to this day.

and Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly is really rather a good film too

2 "lost classic" film in a row that weren't total bobbins. Must be a record.

It even has the "here's Johnny!" moment 10 years early, only with an axe-wielding Nursie :)

It crossed my mind but the only tv versions of these still around seem to be horrible conversions from US copies (ironic as they were made here) and I refuse to pay for stuff which looks so bad.

Psychomania is a cool film IMO,but I'm not sure whether it was meant to be serious (in which case it's unintentionally hilarious) or played tongue in cheek.

Nicky Henson hates it,although I can't see why: Eastenders was a crappier gig.

Would The Omen be considered a British horror film?

Loved Psychomania and The Legend Of Hell House.

My favourites are the two Dr. Phibes films, Scream And Scream Again, And Soon The Darkness, Theatre Of Blood, The Devil Rides Out and Dracula AD 1972.

Some great films listed here.

some corkers in those lists - psychomania, theatre of blood, phibes, devil rides out etc

read about And Soon The Darkness and Neither The Sea Nor The Sand - i'll try and check them out. First one has a 2010 remake I see

witchfinder general
the wicker man (Original with Woodward and Lee)
to the devil a daughter

Hammer made heaps of stuff from the 50's until the early 80's, but the decline in cinema going and the VCR closed a lot of cinemas after that.

It's nice to see a lot of my favourite films mentioned that most haven't heard of! Maybe it's an age thing because most people around my age prefer modern films I suppose.

I love...
The Beast Must Die
Tales from the Crypt (1972)
And Soon The Darkness (1970)
Dead of Night (1945)
Asylum
Theatre of Blood (1973)
The Monster Club is ok but I like the theme more than the film!

[/I]

I love The Monster Club (didn't put it in my list as it was an 80s release) mainly for the Shadmock and the Ghoul Village stories, the filler in the club scenes were pretty poor save for Carradine and Price, stake proof vests anyone? :D

Witchfinder General never did it for me. I kind of think that people liking it was just an indication of how spectacularly rubbish other British films were then......but I love BOSC

To Th Devil A Daughter - do the pervy bits still make up for the rest of it? More Research Needed ;)

Wicker Man - Stone Classic
