Hi new to forum so hi to all.

I have a 7 year old son who on saturday had a hot drink and it burnt his throat. He hasnt eaten since then except for fromage frait and ice cream and fluids. He has been to the GP today who said that things are fine and couldnt see any reason for him not to eat. Every time we give him something to eat, he starts to cry and says that he is scared in case something gets stuck. My wife and I are out of our minds with worry and dont know how to proceed. Its getting to the point where im bribing him with expensive toys, but even this isnt working.

Any advice appreciated

Andy

Your son has had a tramatic experience. While your GP said everything looks fine, you need to take him to a doctor who could pass a camera down his throat and see if there are any scar tissues, etc. He may still have the feeling that there's something there.

Once everything is checked out fine and maybe he'll be able to watch a TV showing the camera looking at things. If the doctor declares him fine all the way down, then don't pacify him with substitute food. Cook your food, make it soft things like Lasagna, Ziti, or spaghetti, call him to eat. If he says 'no' then that's it. leave it alone but do not give him other things to have. As I found, if food is available, there's no child that will starve themselves unless they have a pychotic eating disorder. He just needs to take time to work up being hungry and you'll fine he'll eat. It'll take time. He's scared. Hug him, let him know that you are there to ensure he'll be fine. He'll get the hang of eating again, don't worry.

one other way to address this is through peer pressure. take him and some friends out to a burger place or pizzeria or a place like Chuck E Cheese where's there's activities and games, etc. to get his mind on playing. When he sees everyone else eating, he'll eat. If you find him eating, don't make a big deal about it. Just look at it as an everyday occurrence

Thanks for the info.

I will see how things go. You never know, he could be ok tomorrow. Like you said, he wont starve himself.

Will let you know how things progress.

The first thing that should be done is have a doctor take a look with a camera down his throat.....

then

if everything is o.k. proceed with the soft foods and not making an issue. Don't assume his throat is o.k.
