6680 speaker aperture

Hi guys,

You know the long, thin speaker aperture on the very top of a 6682, 6681 or 6680 (right next to the place where you can loop a lanyard through)? The part where music plays from? Is it supposed to be hollow and unblocked; meaning I'm able to stick a needle or a piece of paper inside of it? Thanks.
 
Also, have any of you experienced this problem: when you set the LCD display brightness to the middle/medium setting, sometimes the LCD screen still goes to full brightness, then it dims to the original middle/medium setting, and it fluctuates between full brightness and the medium setting like that? I don't know if it has anything to do with having the phone plugged into the charger, but it's weird!
