600cc bikes for beginners?

I think not!

I test rode a 1992 FZR600 today. 92HP. The first time on a bike with that much power. I stalled it three times because I was afraid to give too much throttle. And that's after having owned a GS500E and a Virago 750. The midrange but especially high-end torque scared me. But I got used to it fairly quickly.

I have no interested in owning such a powerful bike and today's bikes are even more powerful. A 650 v-twin and even 500 & 250 twins are plenty powerful!!! I'd love to own a Ninja 650R.
A liter bike or larger for the street? Utterly ridiculous! Guys that ride these probably have a small...you know what! ;)
The problem is that, when you start out, you do not HAVE a skill level.
Check out some motorcycle forums and you'll find that for every person who was fine starting out with a 600cc+ bike there are a number who wrecked...
I just remembered that I had a conversation with a sales guy at a local dealership. I asked him about their experience with beginners who bought super sport bikes. He told me that about 50% (half!) of those people wrecked their bike and brought it into their service department.
