600 mile check up

What all is involved witht he 600 mile check up? My riding partner just got a new VTX-1300 and his dealer said they would do his 600 mile for 100.00. They told him they needed to do the check to remove metal shavings and other grimes deposits in his new 08 bike. This is my first new bike and never stop to think if it would shave metal off the cylinder walls. I would have thought that a motor that causes metal to shave off would create some serious blowby. I could see that kind of a problem if no oil is used in the bike but a properly lubricated engine should not have his as a problem should it? My dealer wants 250.00 to run the check. I thought it was kind of pricy for an oil change.

OK, here is what Clymer recommends at initial 600 miles:
1.Change oil and filter
2. Change final drive oil
3. Check and tighten all exhaust system fasteners
4. Check and tighten all chassis fasteners
5. Check coolant level

Then Clymer recommends the following every 600 miles up to 4000 miles:
1. Change oil and filter
2. Check idle speed; adjust if needed
3. Check throttle cable free play; adjust if needed
4. Check front brake pads wear and rear pedal height; adjust if needed
5. Check front brake disc thickness
6. Check front brake disc for rust and corrosion
7. Check rear brake lining wear indicator
8. Check rear brake pedal free play; adjust if needed
9. Check steering play; adjust if needed
10. Check coolant level
11. Check and tighten all exhaust system fasteners
12. Check and tighten all chassis fasteners

Now it's up to you if you would do it by yourself, or if you would help your local dealer to stay in business.

As for me, I do all maintenance by myself, it's fun :bluethum:
 
There is no material removal from the cylinder walls. The rings do need to "seat" within the cylinder wall. You are going to get some metal shavings and metal dust from your gears meshing, new out of the box they are not perfectly aligned. This is the break in process that should have been gone over with you at your purchase and most likely discussed in your manual which you should now have memorized!! It is very important to make it a habit during this process to regularly go through the gear range. The dealer will do this change, change out your final gear lube, check bolt tightness, and generally go over the bike and look for issues. $250 is kinda high, I paid $125.

I have 648 miles on my S50, I was worried that it would be a problem with my dealer, as it went over the 600 mile mark on Sunday. My sales man who is also one of the owners said, not a problem, as long as they see it WITHIN 1000 miles on the OD.

I DID change my oil at 168 miles however. That suggestion was from two other NEW Suzuki owners that did theirs around the same mileage also. Their machines are a 2008 M109r and Hayabusa...

I just purchased a 2008 C50T and the dealer is telling me that they charge 400 for the 600 mile checkup. Glad that I did not purchase his maint package after reading the manual and reading these posts.
 
Just had my 1000 km (600 mi) check done. My dealer charged me 1 hr labour @ $95 (!!!!), around $35 for oil and filter, $4.50 shop fees, $3.00 environmental fee (getting rid of the oil?). Came to $140 something and with 13% tax, the total was $161.

Had a few warranty issues dealt with so I had to take it to the dealer anyway. Needless to say, at $95/hr I think I'll teach myself a bit about motorcycle mechanics. No doubt will be posting lots of questions here.
 
Just wanted to add (since I didn't mention it)... My dealer said that it would cost $140 as well...

Do the valve adjustments need to be checked also? Not sure if that has been mentioned.

Yes, the Valve's are suppose to be checked. However 75% of the dealerships don't do this and charge you an arm and a leg anyways.
 
I really don't mind paying for work that is actually done, is there a way to make sure they do check and adjust the valves? Last new vehicle I bought was a new Honda Accord, the first service on it was free except for the actual materials that were replaced oil and filters. My son bought a new Honda Civic from a different dealer they did his first service completely free, gave him a Honda car wash bucket with tools and gave him a class on how to maintain his new car. I guess car dealers do what's referred to as "Service after the sale" whereas motorcycle dealers do a "Screw you after the sale"

Odd how each dealer charges a different rate from dealer to dealer and from model to model. Motorcycle dealers must not have heard of "customer satisfaction"
 
HA! Well, I was thinking that a request of my dealer to LIST the work they do on a work form, so at least I would have some kind of record...

Is this too much to ask, or, like with work done at my auto dealership, SHOULD be standard procedure ??

For my '06 S50, the 600 mile service (674 miles) was $197.21. The 1-year service at 3,497 miles was $302.14. My 2-year (7,500 miles) service is due this August. These dealership maintenance costs are pretty standard throughout the Denver, CO area.
 
One, you should wait until 600 miles, so the break in oil can finish doing its job. 2nd, put some paint or fingernail polish on the back of one or more of the bolts that hold the chrome shells on top of the heads. The have to remove them to adjust the valves. If they hit it with a wrench it will show. Liquid typewriter paper stuff might work also. I got a wall job on my 600, they did the oil change but that's it.
 
Did my own and will continue to. I did buy suzuki oil and filter, already had gear oil and tools. I will invest in the filter wrench it's tough to get in there without it. Total cost about 27 bucks. I need to get a factory service manual so I don't need to call the dealer to get specs and figure out how to take it apart.
