5cm Per Second Getting a New English Dub? (yes it is)

So Crunchyroll is having a "Makoto Shinkai Day" From Feb. 27th to Feb. 28th, starting and ending at 5 PM PST where they are streaming all of his works for 24 hours: Voice of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and 5 Centimeters Per Second. These will apparently be viewable just about anywhere outside of Japan.

All well and good, but what stood out to me is the apparent news that the English version that they'll be streaming is a new dub made at the behest of CoMix Wave Films--this is the studio that produced the film and is apparently also responsible for its distribution. This is according to a claim that I noticed while lurking the ANN forum thread about it. This is apparently coming from a CR rep ("Rob") and people are treating it that way, so it seems to be worth taking seriously at the moment.

I've quoted relevant details below:

I'm not sure how I feel about this yet. I do have the DVD which I have neglected for some reason, so I think I'll watch it dubbed and then try to see what they've done here. Supposedly this is being done to make it more "faithful" to the original Japanese, though at least some don't see the need for it and are happy with the version they've got. Personally, I don't know how valid this reason is. I'm also unsure about what this means in terms of 5cm's prospects for returning to print on DVD. Does this mean the original version of the dub will not see the light of day again?

Shinkai fans, any thoughts?

It would be nice to see a Blu-Ray release of this beautiful movie with an English sub. I don't really care either way if it's dubbed or not, just as long as it's affordable and the original language track remains intact.

I'm hoping it gets another release. It was pretty difficult to find a legit copy (I ended up settling on near MSRP at Rightstuf). I didn't really care for the dub though. I usually watch dubs whenever I can, and I hardly ever prefer a sub to a dub anymore, but this dub version was an exception. Something just wasn't right about it.

Honestly, I would love it if a new dub was made. Then I would be able to compare the two works to see if it was just the first dub that I didn't like, or just dubs of this movie in general. I also would love it since there would be a "re-release" for those who hadn't picked this up yet.

Thanks for sharing this information. I will definitely watch all three movies this Saturday at some point. It's a great idea!

Even being a huge Shinkai fan...I'm not too sure how I feel about this new dub idea, or whatever it is. I really loved the original Japanese, so most of the time that's what I find myself watching. However, I'm really happy to hear about Crunchyroll's 'Makoto Shinaki Day'. That has to be one of the best things to happen lately. Shinaki is so absolutely amazing and deserves more moments like this to let people see his work. 5cm Per Second is fabulous...so even if they change a few things dub wise...the entire OVA is just too fantastic for it to be ruined or lessened by this.

I said this at the other forum, but part of me was expecting they'd use someone new or not as used as much for something like this. Guess I was wrong. Ah, well. No biggie. Kudos to Kira to being apart of it. =)

I hope they get around to putting this dub on something less ephemeral than crunchyroll in the long term. The US is over due for a blu-ray release of this title, and this just might be the film that gets me atleast get a bd-rom for my computer.

Eh. Why can't they seem to get Akari's voice right? Takaki's is better in this one, but Akari is even worse than before. It seems like there's no emotion at all in her voice. Too bad, I was hoping they would get it right this time.
I guess I'll stick to the Japanese version.

It was a good dub. But, I felt that something was missing that the ADV dub had and some of the redone lines felt artificial. Johnny sounded good as Takaki, but I wasn't completely sold, especially on the last half. Matranga's performance gave a sense of longing and sadness in his worRAB in third part. I didn't get that feel with Johnny. He sounded his best in the second part of the movie. Erika was a bit flat at times, but her ranges fits the characters, and going from Erika to Tara Platt did seem a bit awkward. I liked Kira as Kanae, though.

Good dub, but I rather stick with the ADV version.

Haha. Totally agree with you on both. My favorite part of the movie is deffinitely Cosmonaut.

As for the dub, it was good but I still prefer the sub over the dub at the end of the day. It was just more appealing to me since every voice was absolutely perfect, as well as their performances IMO.
