55 gallon drum history?

I cannot find any historical perspective or reasoning as to why a 55 gallon drum is named such. A drum this size would hold approx 300 gallons of liquid. A normal washing machine uses about 40 gallons of water and that cylinder is substantially smaller than a 55 gallon drum. Is it a solid v liquid argument? Any ideas?
