Hi, Mac OS X as the name says is owned by Apple, but its not completely made by them.

The core of the operating system which is the kernel is called Darwin. The Darwin kernel is made up of BSD kernel which is a descendant of Unix, some Next code has been added to it, and Apple has added some of its own proprietary code as well.

That kernel with all those additions is called Darwin and is an open source project so anyone can use it and is not owned by Apple. On top of the Darwin kernel is the Apple interface called Aqua, that is made by Apple and so r majority of the programs designed for OS X except of Microsoft Office and many open source applications.

That all combined together is Mac OS X, its licensed to Apple but different parts of the system r licensed to different people and not everything is made by Apple.

Edit: Here is an interesting link:

I hope this helped.

Good Luck and take care!
