5230 Debranding

I've never heard anything indicating the possibility of successfully flashing one RM-xxx type firmware to another handset which had an original RM-yyy differing type.

After unlocking the device I have been unable to get it to recognize a non-T-Mobile access point for MMS. It seems it is impossible to add the AT&T MMS settings and have the phone recognize them. On my similar 5800 I can have both T-Mobile and AT&T access points for MMS and simply have to re-select the correct point whenever I swap out the SIM. So, this appears to be a crippling of the MMS function.

You won't get T-Mobile 3G without an Type: RM-593 5230. The type os listed on the device label under the battery.

The name Nuron applies only to the Type RM-593 that has the 1700/2100 AWS band enabled on it. Nuron may also apply only to the Type:RM-593 that are sold by T-Mobile. I'm not sure if Wind is using the Nuron moniker or not.

Flashing a Type: RM-588 to RM-593 will brick your device. It's too light for a paperweight, too small for a door stop so you might want to consider returning it and getting a Nuron if you need the 3G/3.5G speeds.

It's taken me a few months to give this a try as I was in an area where the phone would get a solid 3g lock, but now it switches continuously between edge/3g, and I'd like to manually lock to 3g. Apparently Wind or Dave firmware allows this.

I tried NSS, and every time I've tried to scan phone info, I get a message saying "Scan for product...Error!" Has anyone found a solution? It seems pretty common, but the only advise I could find was "restart phone/computer" or "make sure Nokia PC suite is closed before running." I tried these, but no luck. Help!

Thanks! The thread started off with the recommendation that I use NSS, so I assumed it was possible. I can now stop banging my head against the wall.

I take it then that I have to go through the rather lengthy debranding process solely to get a 3g lock (I live in a rural part of San Diego County, so I count on tethering, and the edge/3g switch is ridiculous)? Are there any simpler means to get a 3g lock?

Thanks

If you are on firmware 11.2, you should be able to debrand to 12.8 with Phoenix. Piece of cake that is. If you want the Ovi sync that 20.8 has, you can do it by branding to Cincinnati Bell. Honestly, that app always errored out on my phone so make sure you ask around if Ovi sync works on the Cincinnati Bell version before you get on it. And finally if you don't like the CB version, you can get the 12.2 firmware from T-Mobile. All this with Phoenix. There is no firmware downgrading for this phone yet, not even with JAF.
