Playing devil's advocate for a moment - there are only so many potential ideas that you can come up with for films. We've had almost a century of commercial film making now so it's hardly surprising that the well is starting to run dry. If yoiu think about it, most 'classic' films were either adaptations of earlier novels or heavily based on particular stories anyway.
It only seems natural that now that movie technology has reached the level where 'anything is possible' that they now take the successful ideas of the past and recreate them in their full modern glory. I know that the motive behind it all is simply to have a 'pre-marketed' film however I don't think there is anything wrong with bringing the likes of Robcop and Battle Royal to a mainstream audience that for what ever reason didn't see them first time round.
I agree that there is a serious problem with the now box office centric obsession of film studios though. If we're not careful than original, quality film making will soon become a thing of the past. I have no idea how to resolve this problem though.
