5-way button won't do single navigation

I've never owned such a strange handheld as this Palm TX. The 5-way navigation button navigates (up, down, right, left) twice for each push. Once on the push and once on the release. So, it is impossible, for example, to advance a single day in Datebook...only 2 days at a time. What the heck???
