5 reasons why droid does: real advantages of jumping off the iPhone train

As an iPhone fan since the original launch, I feel I'm quite qualified to offer up some tangible info on this topic. Apple has really gotten too overconfident in my opinion, and has failed to evolve by the same standards they set with their entrance to the smartphone arena. Really, the first iPhone should have been at iPhone 2.0 standards including SDK & things like copy/paste, and by now it's just sad.

1 - notifications: this should have been in iPhone OS 2.0. Notifications allow you to keep track of everything that's going on with your apps. When you play music, that's an ongoing item in the notification bar. I can see messages, tweets, download status, pretty much anything, and it keeps things clean so that I'm not being interrupted with what I'm doing when something happens. In my opinion this is handled even better than on blackberry since you can view them in a unified location and don't have to try to decipher what events go with what apps like on blackberry profiles.

2 - evolved browser (bookmarks is more user friendly, most visited panel like in chrome, ability to download files) it feels like I have google chrome in my pocket now! FLASH is coming soon as well, this is not likely to come through anytime soon for apple. on the droid I've also noticed I rarely have to do any zooming thanks to the larger screen.

3 - FREEDOM for developers to do what they want and release without review delays. this means better options for the end user and more revenue for the best software. if you don't like what you get on an app, you have the right to uninstall and refund within 24 hours of purchase.

4 - organization between different apps and processes - simple multi-tasking that is under your full control. the ease of using the things you use most is phenomenal on this device. the ability to arrange things exactly how you want and keep other apps hidden away in the main app list is wonderful, not to mention widgets and functionality shortcuts (things like speed dial to specific contacts). UI features like having the menu key to access hidden functions, and ability to press and hold home to pull up a quick app switcher just doesn't exist on iPhone. Being able to get things running concurrently for the purpose of real-time notification and keeping your place between notes, web pages, and messaging is awesome. trying to do this on iPhone is a chore since each app has to run in isolation and you frequently lose your place or get slowed down a lot when you have to jump back and forth

5 - google integration & flair - talk, contacts/calendar, slick gmail, backup, navigation, voice search. there are plenty of other little perks google has provided also such as the battery usage analysis, ability to specify which notifications will use sound or vibration, contact merging, smooth OTA updating, the polish in the system is just enormous

after just a short test run with this device, I knew it was something incredible. After another 30 mins to an hour of testing, I'd discovered these major enhancements and knew that Google really knocked it out of the park with this. After a full day with the device now, I have no lingering doubt whatsoever.

Biggest one of them all. The iPhone is an iPod Touch on AT&T first and foremost, and a phone last. I was just on the phone and the voice quality was so choppy that I thought I dropped the call for a few seconds.

After struggling with IPHONE and ATT's service for 6 months (happy with everything about it physically), I have made it my mission to prevent others from making the iphone leap without understanding that downside. If you are comfortable with endless dropped calls (for no apparent reason), then by all means...buy and iphone.

I was going to jump into that, but it isn't specific to the Why Droid when I love my iPhone question. You always could have settled for a more reliable blackberry but give up the evolution iPhone brought to the table. I think everything you need to know with the network has become blatantly obvious with the amusing recent events in the marketing realm. In practice I have found the droid browser to perform faster because evdo rev A meets & beats the supposedly much faster at&t 3g

By the way, there has also been pretty extensive advancements in the OS for having only been released as OS 1.0 13 months ago!

iPhone took what? Almost three years to finally add video recording and cut and paste?

The G1 has seen OS 1.0, 1.5 and 1.6 and now, in a limited fashion, Android has released OS 2.0.

good point. and i shall add that every phone you see out there, such as the N900, HTC hero (people switch a lot from their iphone to HTC or N900), dont do 100% of the job they are supposed to.

You see, this is misleading because people believe that N900 or HTC HD2 are the most capable smartphone, but what they lack to understand is that even with the implementation of the latest tech, it is cheap.

ex : flash player on N900 is slow like arse and videos on youtube get choppy.
check some reviews about that, like the one on youtube (pushing the capabilities of the n900 part 1 and part 2)

Also i was thinking of selling my 3GS 2 days ago to jump on the N900 bandwagon, but i said S.T.O.P.

No more switching to a phone that wont get me satisfied like the iphone did.
it was the best experience, it is the best phone for me right now, and it will be the best of all later on, when Apple will decide to move their arse and deal with adobe etc.

take my word on that!

Well, yes, the iPhone still has strengths. It still has things unique to the platform. The non-communication centric software on it can't be beat, currently. Just thanks to the popularity of the platform some top-notch development has flocked to it. I love my games and music production tools on it. Keeping it around simply for that reason. This has always been Apple's big mainstream strength. The power of the iPod brand is what set them up for success in launching iPhone.

When it came out, the browser couldn't be beat, and the rest of the interface was a real game-changer. I just think that the opportunity was missed to capitalize on such an incredible lead. Google has stepped up and filled the gap, providing smartphone enthusiasts with a very evolved platform and tempting blackberry/winmo loyalists alike to deviate.

In response to goldsaint - I do agree with you. This post is detailing the literal only things pulling me away from my over 2-year satisfaction with my iPhone. Recently I've had increased frustration with the weaknesses it has dealing with IM and the complications of managing more than a few email accounts. I have never been a big voice user, hence the device never aggravated me in the way many have been over the call quality. It was the perfect mobile device for me. I am actually shocked that something so capable of my needs has emerged at this point.

Would every iPhone lover feel the same way? I doubt it. I was talking this over with some friends the other day. We were predicting whether Apple will try to play catch-up at all with multi-tasking or widget type apps. It's almost like the best way to do that would be to offer an alternate mode where widgets and ongoing app processes were embraced. Simple mode or power-user mode, this way they do not need to compromise for their original unified & simple UI, but offer some extra power to those who want it instead of leaving it up to the homebrew community (which apparently chafes them quite a bit by its very existence).

So does all this apply to the htc hero also? I really want an android phone for att with 3g but the only one i know of is the hero since i think its sold in canada with 850/1900mhz 3g.

Lol thats another reason why the Iphone fails, you have to jail break the phone to get it working the way YOU want it and not how Steve wants it. I wont be surprise if apple decide that they going block out jail broken phones from the apps store, heck you see where Microsoft Bans 1 million users from xbox live I really see apple banning 1 million jailbroken phone from at&t n the app store. :buddies:

seriously dude, the iphone is the first device in the world to offer freedom within less than a minute, jailbraking + unlocking (aka Blakrain)

When i hear people bashing the iphone and try out different platforms such as Android, Web OS, MAemo...all these bad copycats of OSX, i wanna smach 10 HTC's on the floor.
Not just because i hate these copycats, but also because they fail in providing the REAL stuff people are looking for in their device, which is of course RELIABILITY.

i don't have time for chiits to happens on my phone, soft reset, hard reset, pull battery out, press this, press that etc...

iphone = 1 button
all others = more than 1 = chiit

touchscreen = no use of nothing besides the screen right.
HTC, Nokia, SE etc = FAIL once again.

Flash support ?
yes ok...if you like choppy video.

iphone = no flash support?
yes it has for youtube videos link = mobilecinema
HIGH QUALITY VIDEO even on EDGE.

So dont ******** people about the iphone blah blah etc....cause half of the chiit out there cant handle their specs...on paper

and you still want to be honest?

lets put it this way : an iphone user wants to sell his iphone to get something ''better''. Lets see what choice he has ok?

1) Nokia N900
2) Palm Pre
3) HTC HERO/HD2/Touch Pro 2
4) idroid Motorola
5) Blackberry 9700

besides the BB9700 (which is a joke, cause i tried one, and no real innoation over the other ''Bolds''...only the Storm 2 can outperform the chiity 9700)
all others have a chance in competing with the iphone.

Now, what you wanna do with your smartass Nokia, HTC or whatever chiity name they got?

1) Surf the web without experiencing constant crashes, lagging etc

iphone win them all hands down!
check some reviews on youtube or engadget, they are not happy with the browser speed of the droid, N900.

Only the HD2 can outperform Safari cause it has double the processor (1GHz)
and thats a slight 2-3sec in loading a web page!

2) enjoy music with beats by dre or Shure headphones etc

iPhone iPod. period. itunes sync in the speed of light every media u got on your com.
try to load 450 albums in a slow arse 16gb microSD HC card....takes hours or days...lmao

3) u said android market, blackberry market, windows market, nokia store?

LMAO.

L.
M.
A.
O

R.O.F.L
copter

nothing beats Apple iTunes store, AppStore.

4) Email client

iPhone compatible exchange, VPn, Pop etc...nuff said

etc etc..
the list is huge.

Every time i'll hear another nerdz sayin iphone is chiit, i'll kill a kitten.
iphone is not chiit, its DAS CHIITZ !

and it Chiitz all over other smartasses phone, got it?

P.S : with all the money Nasskia, motassrola, sonass Ericsson, HT'***, palm'*** etc have, they should have been the first guys in the market to bring a TRUE Touchscreen device.

Who did this nonetheless?
Apple, wether you want it or not, THEY FUkCKIN DID IT!

Why oh Why in EVERY cellphone review you'll hear a comparaison with the iPhone ?????

Cause its the standard, the way to go with.

Whow. Well said!

You know, other then, um, making phone calls and letting the user know if he/she missed a call, sms, mms or email without having to actually turn on the screen, I guess the iPhone does it all!

I guess all the other cell phone manufacturers can go home.

Game over.

hate to break this to you goldsaint but edge fails. there is no other way of describing it. this is the essence of the primary weaknesses Apple has yet to overcome

my iphone first gen browser would crash constantly, could not handle different web apps designed for it along with other tabs of browsing, over edge. constant crashes, lagging, etc as you put it. my 3gs loses service to edge constantly and it's unusable

2 - Guess what, music sync comes through the same USB bottleneck regardless of whether it is going into SDHC or apple's static memory. who really cares?

3 - apps: toys/games, noise makers, and the occasional IM client for the WTF-ABSENT IM capabilities of the device. For an entire year your only option was using the browser and crashing constantly. there are definitely some cooler apps since the platform has been mainstream for 18 months. that's apple's style, to be the coolest toy in town. That's something to brag about. It's just a shame when your network is laggy as all get-out and you can't use the shiny toys properly how you want.

4- email client: email is email. if it isn't blackberry it's just an email client on your device. who really cares that much? if someone needs to reach me they text or social network.

every review you read is a comparison because the iphone ruined anything that came before it. now it is their turn to be ruined a little bit, and its their choice whether to evolve or stagnate & lose loyal fans such as myself.
