5 Favorite Lyricists

One thing that bugs me about Tom Waits is that when he tells a story, for some reason he has to specify the race and country of origin of every character. Whats up with that?

john lennon
roger waters
bob dylan
conor oberst

creeping his way up the list : alex turner
honorable mention : johnny cash, maynard james keenan

That statement is very true.

It never ceases to amaze me how people think he is seriously miserable.
There's a lot of "tongue in cheek" in his lyrics.

Morrissey, hmm.....

"I'm depressed because I want affection but I'm just too shy"

That kind of outlook just pisses me off.

1. Roger Waters
2. John Lennon
3. Neil Young
4. Kurt Cobain
5. Ian Anderson

3 great musicans (although Syd Barrett is of course better than Waters)...and then you go and spoil it all, by saying something stupid like Conor Oberst

*sang with same tune as that Robbie Williams/Nicole Kidman (?) song.

Nah I don't know, maybe Bright Eyes has good lyrics but I never stuck around to find out because the dude's voice is so annoyingly grating that I never cared to.

I keep forgetting that how technical a band is dertimines how bad they are, and Bright Eyes isn't original? Why don't you give some band/artists who have released anything similar to Digital Ash or Fevers and Mirrors?

Typical example;

Trudging slowly over wet sand
Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen
This is the coastal town
That they forgot to close down
Armageddon - come Armageddon!
Come, Armageddon! Come!

Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey

Hide on the promenade
Etch a postcard :
"How I Dearly Wish I Was Not Here"
In the seaside town
...that they forgot to borab
Come, Come, Come - nuclear borab

Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey

Trudging back over pebbles and sand
And a strange dust lanRAB on your hanRAB
(And on your face...)
(On your face ...)
(On your face ...)
(On your face ...)

Everyday is like Sunday
"Win Yourself A Cheap Tray"
Share some greased tea with me
Everyday is silent and grey

Greatly misunderstood man.

Of all the valid reasons to hate Bright Eyes, because they're not technical is not one of them.

And for the record, you don't have to make technical music to be considered a skilled musician.

syd barrett has had 1 better piece of art than waters... he didnt prove to us he could repeat that.

this thread is about lyricist, not voices. thus conner oberst aptly fits.

"The sun came up with no conclusions
Flowers sleeping in their beRAB
The city cemetery's humming
I'm wide awake, it's morning

I have my drugs, I have my women
They keep away my loneliness
My parents, they have their religions
But sleep in seperate houses

I read the body count out of the paper
And now it's written all over my face
No one ever plans to sleep out in the gutter
Sometimes that's just the most comfortable place

So I'm drinking, breathing, writing, singing
Every day I'm on the clock
My mind races with all my longings
But can't keep up with what I got

I hope I don't sound too ungratefull
Well, history gave modern man
A telephone to talk to strangers
Machine guns and a camera lens

So when you're asked to fight a war that's over nothing
It's best to join the side that's going to win
No one's sure how all of this got started
But we're going to make them goddamn certain how it's gonna end
(Oh yeah we will, oh yeah, we will!)

I could have been a famous singer
If I had someone else's voice
But failure's always sounded better
Let's **** it up boys, make some noise!"

"If you hate the taste of wine
Why do you drink it until you're blind?
And if you swear that there's no truth and who cares
How come you say it like you're right?

Why are you scared to dream of God
When it's salvation that you want?
You see stars that clear have been dead for years
But the idea just lives on

In our wheels that roll around
As we move over the ground
And all day it seems we've been in between
The past and future town

We are nowhere, and it's now
We are nowhere, and it's now

And like a ten minute dream in the passenger seat
While the world was flying by
I haven't been gone very long
But it feels like a lifetime

I've been sleeping so strange at night
Side effects they don't advertise
I've been sleeping so strange
With a head full of pesticide

I've got no plans and too much time
I feel too restless to unwind
I'm always lost in thought as I walk the block
To my favorite neon sign

Where the waitress looks concerned
But she never says a word
Just turns the jukebox on and we hum along
And I smile back at her

And my friend comes after work
When the features start to blur
She says these bars are filled with things that kill
By now you probably should have learned

Did you forget that yellow bird?
How could you forget your yellow bird?

She took a small silver wreath and pinned it on to me
She said, "This one will bring you love"
And I don't know if it's true
But I keep it for good luck"
