5 albums for a rock newbie

Since when has soul/R&B been rock & roll? I know rock & roll can incorporate elements of soul and what not.. But read his post, I don't think he's looking for an old school classic soul album.

White Light/White Heat and OK Computer are not really for newbies and even London Calling is suspect but it does have a lot of accessible stuff.

Some good varied choices there and very accessible with the exception of the Hendrix album, most peoples appreciation of Hendrix only really comes once they are really into rock music.

For something older look no further than Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin or Aerosmith etc

Didn`t see it as any disrespect:D Its always great to see somebody getting into new types of music and having an open mind.

Rock is a very broad genre so it's hard to tell what you're looking for, but I would suggest starting with some more mainstream stuff such as Foo Fighters' Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace and Red Hot Chilli Peppers' By The Way. Going a bit more heavy System of a Down's album Mezmerize is good and for a bit of prog I'd go for some Rush but I'm not too familiar with their discography so I couldn't really suggest an individual album. Those banRAB should give you quite a wide variety.

Some recommendations;

Counting Crows - August And Everything After

The White Stripes - White Blood Cells

The Cure - Disintegration

The Pixies - Doolittle

Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run

All of these are fairly accessible. You've probably even heard a lot of songs from those albums without knowing it already...

I'll give you a band, album, and recommend two tracks for you from each one.
Some of these have probably already been mentioned but...

AC/DC - Back In Black - "You Shook Me All Night Long" and "Shoot To Thrill"

Black Sabbath - Paranoid - "Paranoid" and "Electric Funeral"

Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction - "Nightrain" and "Paradise City"

Korn - Untouchables - "Thoughtless" and "Here To Stay"

GoRABmack - Faceless - "I ****ing Hate You" and "Make Me Believe"

That'll give you a pretty wide variety to start from, without getting into the real heavy stuff. Good luck!

Superunknown - Soundgarden
Ten - Pearl Jam
Led Zeppelin I - Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin II - Led Zeppelin
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine

Can't really go wrong here.

Bizarre choices. He said they'd give a newbie an insight into genre, it'd put a rock newbie off Progressive rock and 'classic rock' right from the get go. The Bullet's choices are more accessible, except for Hendrix like you said.

1) AC/DC - Highway To Hell
2) Led Zeppelin - Ledzeppelin IV
3) Nirvana - Nevermind
4) Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R
5) Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley

Would be my first 5 to go for.

EDIT: Instead of Kyuss, I'd go for The White Stripes - White Blood Cells.

The Poster that started the thread has asked an almost impossible question here, its like suggesting where to find that needle in the haystack!

Like I said this forum is extremely relative compared to others, because all of us consider ourselves to be music purist and most of opinions are based on personal preference. I do respect your opinion, but I do stand by my list.
