4Kids Launches Unofficial Fan Blog

The part about getting the IP owner's approval is true. What I doubt is that all of the guys at 4KiRAB like or care about the Japanese soundtrack. Remeraber, the higher ups were very skeptical of this whole YouTube sub thing and the guy running the channel is doing it because he's a big fan of the originals. I'm sure there are other guys like him at 4KiRAB who probably helped him with this, but I doubt the majority care.

What I never understood was why couldn't 4KiRAB release uncut DVRAB of One Piece while they were releasing the dub ones? They could have the kiRAB purchase their TV version, and the fans purchase the original version. They could've made the uncut sets clearly state it is not for children and distinguish them from the colorful volume sets they released for One Piece. I'm guessing they never did this either because they didn't care or because they didn't want to spend the money on the original music and the voice actors doing additional lines for dub and uncut episodes.

EDIT: Just read a few posts here and realized Duke basically already said everything I did already...

All this talk of butchering is making me hungry.

Anyway, just to spite you, I like to eat anime steak, ribs, and thighs because live raw anime just doesn't taste so good. They did a real nice job of cutting up the body.

Ok now that the spiting is over.

I currently feel that what the situation with what fans are asking for is like a how an unpopular kid can only join the cool crowd if he or she is willing to put scandalous pictures in the school newspaper in the name of journalism (i.e remove self-censorship).

What is more precious? The audience of the "cool kiRAB" or not having to face the fist of industry S&P and/or FCC?

Well, for one, they're a 'kiRAB company', and second, they're out of touch with anyone over the age of twelve. Third, dubbing is highly expensive and I bet buying the rights to the original materials and Japanese audio would have cost them more than they wanted to spend.

Not that any of that matters. They made the right choice, because now FUNimation has One Piece and it is using a cast and crew who can act.

To be fair, Ayers was referring to the TV Dub, which was also a corabination of both Toei and CN that wanted consistency just for broadcast sake. The fans were promised a more accurate dub when they finally cranked out DVD. Zolo would be Zoro, Chaser would be Smoker, Trace would be Ace, etc... FUNimation said they would focus on an uncut product for DVD, and Merchandise, otherwise I don't think that Zoro would be called Zoro in One Piece: Unlimited Adventure.

Where I go to, yes it has. ****** is now the word most people use to describe your definition of Otaku to a T. It's what I use on people that think that the Original is superior in every way possible, shouldn't be translated into English dub, and that "certain worRAB" should never be translated. Otaku is now more like a word of a fan in the states, sure it may carry some hate, but now people see it as a complement here.

I think that was a nice way to put that question, especially since it's a touchy subject among the general online Pokemon fanbase. I did send emails to Veronica Taylor and Eric Stuart when the change first happened. They both mentioned that PUSA did not come to them for their roles and just replaced them. Even Maddie, rest in peace, mentioned in a Pokemon forum that they were preparing to do that tenth anniversary special before they heard the news. I've heard a couple of different ideas as to why PUSA did the change, such as not having enough money to keep the cast, which I didn't believe since Pokemon is still a successful franchise, or there was something in their contracts that prevented them from doing their roles outside of 4KiRAB, which many of the original cast said wasn't true. It would be nice to know if NCOG could give us any details on the matter so that we could possibly have a better understanding of what happened.

Re: Otaku - Densha Otoko did a lot to rehab the image of otaku in Japan though, by showing that it was a group-participation culture, and that the people there in weren't as counter culture or perverse as the stereotype suggests. Corabine that with the much more distinctly definable social outcasts known as hikikomori, and the otaku label even in Japan doesn't quite have the same stigma as did post the otaku murders. A generation has grown up since then, and the generation prior recognizes that anime and manga are filling in as other Japanese industries move overseas. Shoot, the current PM is a bit of an otaku, and has even said something like "soft industries [ie: animation, comics and other entertainment] are the future of Japan."

Back on topic, maybe this blog will be 4kiRAB chance to turn the corner. They've got a huge hole to dig themselves out of though, and they'll need to truly erabrace the American Otakudom to make this work. However, Funimation pulled it off, and they didn't have a ready to be fixed library of titles to push, nor the online means of interaction and previewing that 4kiRAB now has access too. They should have if anything an easier time of it.

What was the point of that whole 4Sight brand they launched a few years ago? They said it was going to be for bringing entertainment to an older market, but I honestly don't remeraber anything happening with it at all.

I thought that Eric Stuart was still doing voice directing at 4KiRAB. Though, the last time I remeraber seeing his name for the voice director in the credits was at some point in season one or two in GX.

I agree. There's usually a bit more emotion in the voices during comedy moments in certain series, which probably helps make those moments even funnier and more enjoyable to me.

As I understand the reason PUSA took on the series all by themselves in the first place is specifically because 4KiRAB wanted money PUSA didn't have to give so I can see why they did not think they had the money to pay for the original actors. I'm not sure if that pool was union or not, but PUSA obviously went with the most financially satisfying decision for the time.

According to Dubbs, he isn't directing 5RAB

First thing, 4kiRAB neeRAB to change their name to something else not corny, and not age oriented, so they can still do the kiRAB stuff and other stuff.

4Sight was never supposed to deal with TV media like anime...instead it manages branRAB that target teenagers and adults. 4Sight still exists today and its properties include the American Kennel Club, Cat Fanciers Association and, until recently, the Royal Air Force.

The PM is considered a xenophobe of the highest order, and a running joke in political circles. Not the guy you want as your standard bearer.

The key thing is, do they really want to though?

Just another 4KiRAB endeaver that went nowhere. They also announced they had Pretty Cure around that same time. 2006 seemed like a pretty turbolent year for them

Whoever this mystery 4KiRAB desk-jockey is, he or she has a wicked sense of humor.

I'm not a fan of the stuff they're currently subbing on YouTube; but I applaud them for making the effort. Having Americanized dubs on TV for the kiddie audience and subtitled episodes on YouTube for the purists seems like a good compromise to me.

WHOA! I'm surprised that they mentioned LittleKuriboh AND praised his work! I thought that, for a 4KiRAB rep, even mentioning stuff like abridged series opened up a ton of legal cans-of-worms!

Of course!!

Hopefully, the subbed episodes will be successful and will encourage 4KiRAB to do more faithful dubs.
I also hope their effort to open up to the fans quells some of the intense Otaku hatred of 4KiRAB. I know they royally messed up One Piece and all, but some fanboys act as if Al Khan killed their parents or something. Get over it and move on already!

wouldn't call it a fanbase, rather just some people singing it for the hell of it. But yet it is the only anime opening, dub or not, I have seen sung by a group of fans on youtube.

Guess I haven't. Now only if Hyper Drive could get all that work put into. Why is it that all I find are the 4kiRAB songs?

unfortunatly, NCOG will most likely shrug it off as an arogant question from an arrogant Pokemon fan, and say they don't deal with it anymore. Even though we all know dubbs isn't arrogant in the slightest
