4Kids Cancels Yu-Gi-Oh! Subs; Sonic X, GX and 5D's Planned Instead

Having read the entire manga from beginning to end, I'm not so much disappointed at this news as excited that they're going to stream 5D's subbed.

What can I say? I've had some ugly experiences with fan translations and Yu-Gi-Oh! in the past and if the official subs - even if they are from 4KiRAB - have been properly QC'd and written in actual English instead of ******* moonspeak (I'm looking at you, TV-Nihon), then I'll gladly put aside my old grudges. As long as there aren't any more "VA issues", that is.
 
The worst are the dreaded Hong Kong English fansubs, which are really badly translated. They most likely simply put all the Japanese dialogue in an auto translator program. Those subs make an English teacher cry. Even though 4kiRAB was forced to keep the US TCG names, everything else was pretty accurate in their subs. They were definitely the best English subs for the series, although short lived.
 
I don't follow the franchise much at all anymore. I don't want to have to reregister just to see one post.


Not that it really matters anymore. I've got a good enough understanding now.
 
New info on Janime. Also, were the 4kiRAB subs that good for only 5 episodes? Did it really stand out. Guess GoldenUmi and his crew helped well.
 
I remeraber this one time on GameFAQs there was a furor over how 4KiRAB had "dubbed" the card "Akumu no Tetsuori" as "Nightmare's Steelcage". The reason people were up in arms? The HK subs called it "Nightmare Fence".

1. I put "dubbed" in quotes because for a while there, and I suspect elsewhere as well, the efforts of 4KiRAB had made "dubbed" shorthand for "edited all to hell". Needless to say, I fought this misusage tooth and nail.

2. "Akumu no Tetsuori" means "Nightmare's Steelcage". That's right. People were complaining that 4KiRAB had used the correct translation, just because it didn't match the crappy subs they watched.

Before that, there was an episode when Dark Crisis (the Japanese 304 and 305 sets) came out in the U.S. and people were upset over the card "Pandemonium", because it wasn't called "Lair of the Ten Thousand Demon LorRAB" as per Edo's (infamous) site. I imagine you can guess where this is going: the original card name is written "Banmaden - Akuma no Soukutsu", with the name "Pandemonium" written over "Banmaden" in katakana (in much the same way that the famous "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" has its name written in katakana over kanji meaning much the same). While not a strictly literal translation, this makes the obvious rendering of the name "Pandemonium - The Place of All Demons", as per Paradise Lost. So really, all they did was truncate the name; the mistranslation was Edo's.

It's gotten better as of late, much better, but by and large the olden days were marked by rampant durabassity. (And on a third topic, "Elegant Egotist" was never "Thousand Prism Mirrors". The name "Mangekyou - Kareinaru Bunshin" should be partially penetrable to fans of Naruto: it means "Kaleidoscope - Beautiful Doppelgangers".)
 
They also called Kaiba "Seahorse" in quite a few episodes, Mai "Phoenix", the Millenium Rod so many different names such as "Millenium Stick", "Millenium Staff", etc. They even started using certain dub names, but they would call Jounochi "Wheeler" for short, when he should be saying "Joey for short, as far as using dub names.
 
I actually bought some Shaman King bootlegs from before the uncut DVD releases, and I have to say that the subtitles were actually very good - for about five episodes, and then they deteriorated into standard HK sub quality.
