Do you need a special license to ride a 49cc scooter? I am purchasing a scooter and will be getting lessons, but do I need anything special for it? The link below is the scooter.

Honda 49cc is a motorcycle for riding purposes according to the state. you need a motorcycle license or permit (Class M or MJ, respectively), and full registration and insurance

if your lessons are state approved and offers a skills test waiver for a pass, i am not sure if you can get that waiver if taking the course on a scooter. here in Cali you can take the course and pass, but not get a waiver. however, you can take the DMV skills test on a scooter and get a full motorcycle license. i would think your state is similar, since they require an M license to ride a 49cc scooter. i doubt your little scooter would be Class B, as they typically can reach 40 - 45mph. because of the stupid MJ riding restrictions, you perhaps should work on getting your full M license asap unless commonly riding along with another scooter or motorcycle rider who is licensed and over the age of 21

Moped and Scooter Classifications - New York:

"The DMV divides mopeds and scooters into three classifications (A, B, and C) based on top speed. Each class comes with specific requirements and restrictions.

Class A reaches top speeds between 30 and 40 mph, requires a class M/MJ license, and can operate in any traffic lane.

Class B reaches top speeds between 20 and 30 mph, does not require a specific license, and can only operate in either the right hand lane or along the shoulder.

Class C reaches top speeds of 20 mph or less, does not require a specific license, and can only operate in either the right hand lane or along the shoulder.

The Class M or Class MJ learner's permit allows you to drive a motorcycle as long as a driver 21 or older with a valid motorcycle license supervises you and remains within 1/4 mile of you at all times. There are additional restrictions on Class MJ permits that dictate when, where, and with whom you may practice; review the rules posted at the DMV website."

great 50cc scoots, and the second one has a "max" speed of 30mph, making it a Class B, legally speaking. of course, there are ways to coax more speed out of it very easily. and no one has to know but YOU and your scooter mechanic. see these post, especially the last one
