After 2 failed trials with antibiotics, I was given low dose (20 mg) Accutane today at my dermatologist appt. I have cystic acne but only on my chin. It is persistent and responRAB to virtually nothing. I used Accutane about 15 years ago with excellent results. Now, it's time again. Who would have thought that this late in life I would need this. But I am tired of constant sore cysts, drying and ineffective creams, soaps, astringents. So today, I pulled the trigger. Hope it works out as well this time around.

Good Luck, you sound like you have menopausal acne. I know, I have it too. I have tried all sorts of things, never accutane, I get my best results from Retin-A.

Thanks to those who have responded. The strange thing is that I had a hysterectomy w/ovaries out 5 years ago and am on HRT so I do not think I am going through menapause. I am actually trying to avoid it to some extent for at least 2-3 more years. I went for 4 years on this HRT w/no acne. So why now? I do believe it is hormonal but I just don't understand the how or why of it at this point.

Hi CaliGirl,

Just wondering how the Accutane is working, and, any side effects? I began 40mg/day yesterday, have the same painful cysts (on my chin) and nothing else has helped. I had a hysto (kept ovaries) 7 yrs ago and am now 51. I'm nervous about side effects but am out of options with normal remedies! Hope things are great!

hey Cali, How is the accutane working out for you? Funny I too at 48 started on Accutane for same thing, cystic on chin. I only have a month or 2 left. My derm has me on 60 mg. So far very good, no break outs and the drying has stopped except for the obvious need for lip balm-totally expected that. What I need to figure out is how to fix the left over scarring from the cystic acne and the cheapest way to do it. Have you heard of good results from treatments. I am going to research the Obaji blue peel and the profraxional laser.
