411mania's "worst 80s songs":

i agreed with the authors and my criteria for deciding if the song was any good were:
would you buy this album?
would you pay for this song?
would you spend the time to d/l it for free?

my answer to each was not really or no

on the other hand
i wouldnt just get up and walk out if any of them played within my hearing
 
I like at least 30-40% of the songs they mentioned. And the person who listed "She's Blinded Me With Science" as one of the worst deserves a smack upside the head.
 
I think it's debatable. There certainly was plenty of electronic music being produced before he came along, but his particular take on it seems like it was somewhat unique for the time. Of course that time was the 70s not the 80s so we're still in agreement that the person who wrote that piece didn't know what they were talking about.
 
Best line on the site:

BEST 80's: 1. "Cars" by Gary Numan- great synth tune, and more than a one-hit wonder. The album is very good and Gary Numan himself was a pioneer in the electronic genre.

They really have'nt got a clue. The worst record of the 80's was easily 'Shappad You Face' by Joe Dolci or 'The Birdie Song' by The Tweets or 'Agadoo' by Black Lace or............I could go on for ever.

B-52s- "Love Shack"

I don't think it was that unique.

The Human League & Japan were ripping off Low just as much as he was at the same time.

The only difference was he wrote a hit single before they did.
 
Agreed. Even banRAB such as Punishment Of Luxury were using similar templates and adding guitars before Numan decided to strip it down a little and replace the guitar riRAB with keyboard riRAB.
 
*shug*. I'm no big Gary Numan booster, I'm just saying I don't think someone is wildly off base for thinking of him as an early electronic pop pioneer. Considering the level of retardation in these lists I don't think it's that big a deal. I mean the same person who mentioned Gary Numan also claims "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel to be one of the top five songs of the 80s RAB.
 
In the sense that Gary Numan was about as much as a pioneer in electronica as I am in nuclear physics I would imagine.

Or thats how I read it anyway.
 
Yeah, I'd say on average two songs on each list were not bad at all.

Also, I'm curious why the first author would describe "Don't Worry Be Happy", an a cappella song, as "electronically devoid of life". The same guy describes Georgia Satellites as rockabilly. We are obviously not dealing with very knowledgeable people here.
