40 Greatest Blockbusters On C5 Last Night

Did anyone see this? A bit like one of those C4 shows about greatest movies/songs. This was meant to be a list of the best "blockbuster" movies of all time. It was based on a poll by C5 viewers and readers of a national paper (The Times I think). Personally I would exect this to be big summer/Xmas blockbusters like Star Wars/Jaws/pirates of the Caribbean/Lord Of The Rings/Independance day and indeed all of those titles were present. But there was no Indiana Jones, no Terminator films which I found strange. And some of the films which were included could hardly be classed as "blockbusters". The strangest entry was One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest which was number 9! I am not doubting that this was a good film but it was hardly a big budget blockbuster. Intersting programme but slightly odd choices.

Another strange thing I thought, was that they were very definite about the Lord of the Rings film being "The Fellowship of the Ring", even down to the captions quoting the Oscars received etc. A fair placing for this film I thought, but what they're saying is that the other 2 weren't good enough for placings which is absurd.

Same went for Star Wars, only Episode 4 got a placing.

Is there a specific definition of a blockbuster?? Ie a particular amount of profit or a certain number of people who saw the film??

I always think the definition of a blockbuster is a big budget movie. X men/Batman/Armageddon/Independance Day/007 etc. I also noticed none of the Batman films were in there. I would have thought the first Michael Keaton/Jack Nicholson one would be in the list.

Oh dear! Ch5 what a cock up with this top 50! Gladiator as No2? I remember going to see Gladiator! (which yes i love the film) and at the time it wasnt a blockbuster! at that time it was Mission Impossible 2! as i can remember! Gladiator was hardly heard credited at the time of release! Yes a great film! indeed but the term Blockbuster! for Oceans 11? aswell! I could go on and on! as many more will. Who made this top 50 up? some guy just thinking up films as they came to his head!

Titanic was 13th wtf, i turned this program on when it was down to about the last 23 films and though Titanic was defo gonna be in the top 3. Gladiator was 2nd what ?

Yes I was suprised Titanic was only 13th. They didnt spend long on it either. I couldnt believe they didnt put a caption up saying it is the biggest grossing film of all time.

Titanic was the first film in history to gross over One Billion Dollars. Since then LOTR: Return Of The King has grossed that much and just recently POTC 2 became only the third film ever to achieve this.
