3Gs need explanation

Hi
i got 3Gs from USA in recovery state (i think its recovery, on screen was only cable)
forecast show: model: 3Gs, ver 3.1.2
i attached it to PC and start Itunes (inside was foreign operator sim, not USA)
i did nothing
after some minut Iphone started and was in working state
why it happened?

next i continued experiments (i forgot for sim, it was allways inside)
i tried update it to v4.0, but unsuccessfull
i add 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com into hosts file and successfully flashed it to v4.0 from DFU state
now Iphone again in recovery state
forecast show: modem 05.13.04, boot 6.4
as i understand its new boot and no any chance to jailbreak now
i renew host file and try downgrade to v3.1.2, or 3.1.3 but unsuccessful, allways 3194 error
so i leave Iphone in recovery state connected for charging
after some minut it starts!!! and Itunes show "Your Iphone successfully unlocked"
i restart it and power off/on
it still works
pls explain why it happens?
does it mean this phone was factory unlocked or what?

it wont hurt to try a sim from your country in the phone so you can know whats really happening
 
i'll try to explain in parts.

its not recovery mode if iphone says "No SIM inserted Insert an activated SIM".
It is recovery mode if on the screen it shows only cable
Every iphone must be connected to itunes for the first time to activate it.
And because this iphone is factory unlocked, it was activated with any card.


u tried to update to v4.0 but unsuccesfull because apple closes it's signature verification for restoring below the latest OS because it always closes old firmware verification whenever new version comes.
The latest OS is 4.0.1 at the moment.

And each time you restore the iphone with any firmware, u need to activate it after.

what i,m saying is take out the usa sim and put a sim from your country in the phone and see if its unlock
