32" widescreen lcd tv on BEV 4700 questions...

Hello...

I'm seriously considering getting a 32" widescreen lcd tv to replace my current CRT tv. I'm using the 4700 series BEV receiver and to be honest, I'm a little concerned about how things will look on a widescreen. I don't plan on upgrading to HD right away. I guess my biggest concern is that things will look stretched...

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated...

Well yes the image will be stretched if you have it set at 16:9, you could just set it at 4:3 and it will be fine.
 
Non HD programs (4:3) will be normally seen with black bars at left and right.

But you can zoom to fill the screen.

Zooming (cropping the top and bottom) is surprisingly effective for a lot of programming. It will be a problem for sports scores and news tickers. Some shows and movies are letterboxed in SD anyway.
 
if you aren't planning on going HD, save your money and don't bother buying the TV...SD on an LCD TV is almost unwatchable.
 
Thats a very valid point.

I would go as far as to say that if you are investing in a new LCD, spend some extra and get an HD receiver, it is well worth the extra cash.

There is no reason for it not to look "pretty good", however, I would suggest you watch it 4:3 and not stretched.
 
If you're watching pillar-boxed SD content on a 32" widescreen, it's equivalent to a 26" 4:3 screen. Based on visual acuity, your optimal viewing distance is about 8' for SD content. So, unless you're on top of the TV, your 32" widescreen LCD should look fine with SD content, assuming you've set up the inputs correctly.

Then again, once you upgrade to HD, your optimal viewing distance decreases to about 4-5' (assuming it's 720x1280). So you might want to consider a bigger screen.
 
at my previous job, we had a 32" samsung LCD tv and SD was almost unwatchable on it...that said, i am not a big fan of most LCD tv's.
 
I agree, we too had a 32" LCD and unless it was set at 4:3 it was dreadful.

Save your money a little longer, get a 42" Plasma.....lol With a FREE HD box from Express Vu, sure I just saw that promo somewhere.....
