3100 Problems Thread

Did you switch the LNB that the 3100 is using? Is this a Dish Network or Expressvu setup? Not a DishPro LNB is it? Would have big DP letters on it.
 
Defective receivers should never been returned to the store, it always goes back to TECH3, the only time that a store should take a receiver is when it's found defective BEFORE the activation...

Stores, to my knowledge are not supposed to sell any refurbish receiver or make any receiver exchange whether in or out warranty

If client doesn't return a defective unit and is being send a refurbished he would have a penalty for non-return of equipement, I belive the cost of the receiver, but i'm not 100% sure about that.
 
My 3100 will lose all channels and instead i will get a few channels i do not even subscribe to (such as Saskatchewan Legislature). This happens multiple times a day. Sometimes it fixes itself, sometimes pulling the smart card works. The 6141 (connected to the same dish) always works flawlessly. I know there is not a problem with the receiver because we tried another receiver and the same problem. The wires have been swapped so they are not the problem. Also when I do the Check Switch test it always fails.
 
Nice to have is one output with volume control (for the TV) and another with full volume (for a recorder.) E*'s designs have omitted this feature. :rolleyes:
 
yes it was the 2 tv soultion. but the picture on the web was of 4100 recievers. (fine print: may not be exactly as shown :) .... no ****)
Anyway, i didnt even notice until i saw the empty boxes in my garage. The recievers seemed new when i took them out of the box with the installation man. All the cords where in factory bags along with the recievers, which were surronded by stryofoam. and the boxers were factory style too, saying bell expressvu 3100 and taped shut.

It is just old I think. Here is why.

I tried it again, after it was unplugged (both power and satellite in) for a couple weeks.

Lo and behold it worked. However after only a few minutes, it again says there is 0% satellite signal. Sounds like once it warms up, it quits.

I have my next PVR on route, so no worries. I only watch PVR tv now anyhow.
 
It may sound ovious, both is your cable comming from the dish hooked in SAT IN, not TV/ANT IN? I had many cases where person was calling for technical assistance after replugging a receiver and that's all it was...

Also, try another receiver in the room where the problem is happening...this will determine whether it's the receiver, or the cable
 
Depends how the electronics are set up.

The would have to do it either in "software", by digitally adjust the "level" of the audio stream going to the DAC, would would provide variable audio output to all outputs.

Or they could use two programmable DACs, one fixed, the other variable, or a volume control IC, and provide separate audio outputs, but either would add cost to all users, for the benefit of a few users.
 
Ok, I switched to my other dish, different LNB, different cable run into the house, still get the same thing, no even transponders or channels that use even transponders, the cable inside the house was never touched, so I guess I can assume it must be the receiver. Since these receivers are not very expensive, I guess there is no point trying to repair it, and maybe time to upgrade to a PVR version, might even make the wife happy.

If it works for a short period it does sound like it is overheating, somehow.

There was talk on this forum of a connexiant chip, I believe, that fails in the 3100. I was aware of that problem with the 5100/5800 models but someone says the same thing occurs with the 3100, so that could be the problem.

He, The Bell World is selling all models, 3100, 5900, 6100 and 9200's All are refurbished.

I will go and chat with him on Monday, he might not be aware or he might just want to move some product.
 
Like he said, they are refurbs....
The only feature they lack (that I know of) is an optical output, but from looking at them, they are a better constructed receiver. I have heard of 4100's losing signal from being too close to the TV....
 
I have 2 3100,s both were extras and they were hooked up to my spare tv,s through cable in and cable out. Basic tv hookup. Never were they hot ever.

Recently I purchased a samsung dvd recorder. I moved one of the 3100,s up to use with my dvd recorder. I am using the satelite in from the dish, the RCA audio red and white into the dvd recorder as well as the s video into the dvd recorder. The unit now gets very very hot. If I unplug all connections and just have the unit pluged into ac it does not get hot. I thought there was a problem with the unit as I have not used it for some time. I switched out the unit with my second 3100 and have the same problem. It is not because the ventilation is poor. there is plenty of room for the unit to breath. Does anyone have any ideas.
 
I agree, I would rather have the 3100's than the cheap plastic 4100's, unless I really wanted Dolby 5.1.......
 
If the "Check Switch" fails, there is a problem with the cable/switch feeding it or the receiver itself. If another receiver placed at that location works fine and the "Check Switch" passes, then you have a bad receiver.

Loss of programming could also be the Smart Card.

Call Bell TV, explain the problem, see if they are willing to ship out a new Card, although if you mention the "Check Switch" failing I would doubt it.

do i have to worry about them sending me new cards or whatever? ... in the years to come
 
My parents 3100 (bout 4-5 years old) a few days go was not getting any signal, I jyst happen to have another bell sat wire at the same place connected to another different dish but still bell (used to be a dishnet sat). I connected that satelite feed all was ok. But 2 days later same issue.. 3100 has no signal... I tried the reciever at a different location I got no switch detected..ok so I thought reciever bad.. however I took a working 6200? at the first location and I also could not get a signal and switch test failed... So I'm kind lost at what it could be..


I have 2 bell dish's on roof.. 1 has a sw44 with 3 recivers (or used to be 3), 1 9242 works (dual), 1 6200, and had my parents 3100 also..

The other dish is a dual lnb with sw21 switchs's..

The 3100 will not work with either feed, in any room.. the 6200 also does work at my parent location..

Could it be both Wire and IRD?
 
Hopefully this card swap will be the last for a while, as long as they have stumped the pirates this time....
If the pirates crack it again (it could happen) then you should expect another card swap, but I hope there isn't one for at least another few years!
