3100 Problems Thread

I ordered 2 recievers from bell.ca

I am very happy with my service but i was given 3100 recievers. They were new, sealed in boxes with plastic etc.

Again, they are in new condition and I have found their user interfaace to be 100 times better then my old crappy Starchoice recievers from year 2000.

Should I care that i was given 3100? does it really matter?

That is a possibility however it's the 4100 that is better known for that problem.

He doesn't have a TV, his receiver is plugged into his computer, which is a big PIA for volume control. I have the same problem with a 6100 receiver.

i have checked the connecters and can visually see nothing wrong, I only disconnected the one connecter for a week while I was installing the other dish and system, so it was just disconnected, left hanging in the basement then reconnected after a week.

All the cableing is RG6, when I wired my house I wired every room with it and terminated them in the utility room in the basement, the dishes come into this room and connect to whichever room in the house the tv's are in.

I tried the 3100 receiver on the cable going to my hd receiver on the same dish, and it didn't even get a signal on it there, yet the hd unit works fine.

Power was unplugged, left for an hour and plugged back in, no difference.

The 3100 runs directly from the LNB, no switch on it. The hd unit runs one cable from the same LNB and one from the second LNB, so unlikely it could have gone bad I would think.

I am starting to think it could be the receiver, I'll have to see if i can borrow a friends receiver and try it to confirm, any other regular (non HD) receiver should work?

Thanks for the help.

Those refurbished are offered only to client who does have a defective unit of the same model all regular non PVR (including 6100) are 49$ + 12$ shipping & handling and all PVR (including 9200) are 149$ + 12$ Shipping & handling

We do not offer those refurbished units to new clients, we only offer them to replace out of warranty defective receivers. Also a client that does have a defective let's say 6100 won't be able to buy a refurbished 9200 to replace it...

The old unit needs to be returned, otherwise, client will be charged a panalty for non-return of equipement

Nothing new there Nimiq 1 it was always like that, at least since I got to Express Vu a little over a year ago

I would think that in this case, the number of people that want the option is extremely small.

I doubt that the cost of the hardware, firmware to support it, increased calls about volume levels being wrong because the user played with it in the menu, etc are significant compared to the number of people that do not have an amp, tv or other device between the receiver and their speakers.

Running through your PC is likely a very small percentage as well, and you can of course control the volume manually or buy a set of speakers with a remote (some audio cards have this as well - I thought most/all PC tuners cards had remotes?).

Well what are the symptoms? Did you do a check switch? Did you do the card swap? Does the unit power on? Does it just blink? Can you get to the menu?

I'm not sure, but it sounds like you are using a diplexor
That will allow the satellite signal to travel up to the receiver, from the basement, and then send the "tv out" down to the basement, for the 2nd TV
Can you post a picture of the "splitter" ?
I believe if you upload it to a site like imageshack you will help us figure out what is going on
If it is a diplexor, hook all of the cable up
The wall plate cable (feed) should go into the single input on the diplexor
Then, hook up the sat signal feed to the satellite LNB in on your receiver, and the "out to tv" to the appropriate "tv out" on the diplexor
I hope this makes sense, and if it doesn't get that picture up here and it will clear things up

As you are apparently with BEV, can you comment on the status of their rag-tag fleet of castoff satellites? There have been many complaints about weak/missing transponders and the near constant shuffling of channels transponder-to-transponder.

In my case I don't use a TV tuner. The receiver is connected straight to my second monitor through the DVI port and I route the sound through my sound card because the monitor doesn't have speakers.

Most of the support calls would be eliminated by having the functionality turned off by default. Either way I don't think the software/hardware costs are really relevant here, especially when they put completely useless functionality like call display on a TV receiver ;)

Hello, Agent Express V! can you please tell me how to reach you on the phone? it seems you are very competent in BEV. When i dial the 1-888-759-3474 line, what name do you go by at the call centre? Other CSRs i've spoke with were not much of a help at all. :D

When out of the Datastream for a long time the information stored on the Smart Card is not updated so the receiver will no longer show the channels you subscribed to. It will still show the free channels, 198 etc.

Yours appears to have developed another problem far more serious than just deactivation. It could also be that the cable feeding from the Dish to the receiver has a fault on it as well, try disconnecting this cable, see if the receiver stays switched on.

Oh come on now, the Caller ID feature is fantastic, you no longer have to Pause Live TV to get the call from Bodge It and Scarper Duct Cleaners, or from Yanosh from the Moving Company.......

I had a similar problem (no "odd" transponders on 3100, yet everything was fine on 6100s) which turned out to be a faulty DP Twin LNB (which has a built in "SW21" switch). Easiest way to check for this is to connect 3100 directly to LNB via new cable - if you're still only getting even transponders with this test, try switching LNBs. If you still only get even transponders after trying different LNBs, has to be the receiver.

You could be right, I never thought of a Diplexer. I was thinking more of a Down converter....

It depends what you ordered.

If it was the 2TV solution, then that is a pair of 3100's.

You will find that the 3100's are refurbished, there have not been any new ones for years.

...but it has nothing to do with receiving TV, which a volume control addon would. My point is that if they have resources to waste implementing such "nice to have" features, they should have plenty of resources to implement other "nice to have" features that actually have something to do with receiving and properly controlling the TV signal.

Thanks Pinza.

I know the cable works fine now since I installed a brand new RG-6 cable and tested it with a friend's receiver.

I guess my 3100 is dying... :(

I just visited a Bell World Store and they have a shelf full of Refurbished 3100's, selling them at $49 each.

That was why I asked the question.

I just called the Manager and he said he has no restrictions and will not take defective machines at the store.

I guess it is up to the Customer if he wants to ship back the defective unit or not then.

Is there a penalty if the customer does NOT return the defective unit.?

With a couple of million units out in production, I'd say a number fail each and every day. The older models in particular have known design flaws.

Electronics fail for all sorts of reasons. Heat is the primary killer.

Having said that, there are many posts with basic troubleshooting tips that you can try to ensure it is actually the receiver and not some other issue.
