30 minutes with the MT4G

I F*cking hate it.
It's such a humiliating shame that they had a half way likable phone and then decided to slop Tmobile's ugly GUI all over it.
and I don't see the light bulb idea that stuck above someones head thinking they shouldn't make it a micro usb charging port.

I hate this thing.
genuinely hate it.
Doesn't seem easy enough to root yet, and I don't think Cyans rom for it would really cancel out all the ugly tweaks this monster has.

And to make things better I think I counted 37 bloatware applications I will never want but someone decided I need them on my phone forever.

Yes I've installed alternative home replacements, texting apps, etc.
I hate it and thats all I can really keep saying about it.
I'll stick with my rooted G1 running 2.2. anyday over these touch screen abominations.

/frustrated rant.
CURSE!

Aha right?
It's just too much to stomach.

This phone won't ever ben an Iphone Killer because someone specifically sat down and thought
"Gee, what kind of incredibly in dept applications can I cram onto this device permanently that someone might use?"
There's
Well first problem is Android hasn't dropped Amazon mp3 yet haha.

There is three clock applications in the drawer
"clock"
"desk clock" "desk dock"

They have an application for the demo video.

A flashlight app :|
Fm Radio (eh)
Friends stream (kill me)
They ruined the gallery.
Genuis button (blahhhh)
gmail
mail
(yahhoo) mail
yahoo messenger
monopoly
my account
my device
my modes
pdf viewer
poop
places
quick office
setup stock
tmobile tv
weather
wifi calling
wifi hotspot.

and like, I can find 3 BETTER applications for any one of those SYSTEM applications in the market blindfolded.
Instead of bloating an application and making the drawer look like hell, Android should make a new section in the market
Sprint > sprint tv nascar blah blah blah
T mobile > endless junk
Verizon > endless nickle and dime features.

etc.
That would be ideal!

But nope, no Android phone will ever come out and make iPhone users feel like it's better because of all the bloatware and tweaked UI.

This stupid phone has a square tint around every application and ok, cool for a second maybe, download a new home app, avoid it, BUT NO! It's in the notification bar also.

Such a gosh damn shame.
Such a shame.
I'm going to end up trading this for a g2 or just a camera.

And now that I'm cooled down I realize more the whole My Touch campaign and personalization but this is total horse ****.

Merry Christmas!

I don't want to hear any hype about this phone ever, it's got 8 hardware buttons and it's responsive with multi touch gestures, congratulations you FINALLY got the first My Touch device right! Oh what? This is like the third device out in that line?

Shaking my head forever.

That's my rant, someone should let me know when there's a good guide out for (perma)Rooting this thing without using ADB and junk.

But lastly I have one nice thing to say, it's a nice pocket camera but that's it.
The wifi antenna seems to be at the top of the phone and I seem to drop and fail a lot of texts when I'm holding it in landscape.

Cool right?
Anyway look how decently clean my engine head looks (cut me some slack it's a 20 year old AWD model truck haha)
Taken on the MT4g

Wow, came back with a boom lol. Tell us how u really feel? ;-)

The MT4G is awesome but I agree, the bloatware and that version of Sense is lame. I think its for teens and fems.

Root with visionary apk here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225

Load up cm6 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876632

And enjoy one of the best handsets on the market to date :-)

I tried using visionary, and small stuff like that, I can open root explorer and it gets it's permission, but I can't change the r/w mount thing to delete apps when I'm inside it, and in bootloader I don't have s off for permaroot or whatever, so I'm going to wait till it gets easier, plus this hasn't recieved an OTA / there isn't a lot of good talk going around about how to know/check and all that.

And yes came back with a boom haha,
It's smooth and it's a lot nicer than my G1, but that doesn't mean much, the phones UI finally runs how it's suppose to big whoopdeedoo.

ANDDD there's no room for me to not park under a tree at my house lol, but I was pulled into the driveway at the time to clean it and not be in the street Love my truck

so why don't you rip the stock rom, delete any .apk's you HATE, replace them with what you like/love or don't replace them at all.

then flash it back and stfu

stfu? Usassyhuh?
Cause I can't gain true permaroot s=off access yet/have been successful so when I use Root explorer to delete these stock applications it won't allow me to switch over to the read w/r mount or whatever to delete those files.
Tried using rom manager and installing clockwork but that also hasn't worked.

Any more questions you keyboard samurai?

Hah I don't know man, the whole phone just feels like a buzz kill.
it's a pull down lock screen
You can't escape the fact all the applications have a square tint around them
They tweaked the settings UI
I continuously navigate through applications wrong because there isn't really a solid space to separate the navigational buttons from the screen.
The scroll pad seems more solid, but less intuitive then a track ball.
Maybe if the surface space was bigger.

It'ls pulled up contacts from my sim card and t mobile account from like 5 years ago.
The genuis button instead of a dedicated search button
The way the usb debugging comes on

I just find myself clicking and doing a lot more than I should have to do.

There's three clock applications installed
clock, desk clock, desk dock,
there's a flashlight app
a dedicated icon in the drawer (that I haven't clicked on till now but holy **** you've got to be kidding me) that says demo videos and when I clicked it it took me to ****ING YOUTUBE!

Seriously, an app launcher that takes me to youtube?
:|

There's just so much about this phone that is wronged.
When I open the gallery it's tabbed at the bottom
albums
faves
my albums (tmobile)
facebook
flickr

and inside contacts
it's tabbed at the bottom as well
contacts
faves
phone
call log
voicemail

and it's all extremely pushed on you.
Like some idiot sat down and brain stormed what the definition of a clock application should be
a timer
a counter
a visual ambient display

etc.
It's sloppy
I hate these applications and probably the whole entire My Touch line.
I don't feel like this is sophisticated, an iPhone killer, or anything representing the Android platform, it's just a Tmobile phone with a Tmobile UI.

Wack.

If i knew how to dump the factory rom, i'd remove all the stuff myself that I know comes on the phone that i would never use...buuuuut i dunno how to do that.
if anyone has a link or would like to dump the rom that is the most current. pls do

Don't let it, I have the phone myself. VISIONary+ drops, and I'm able to "freeze out" the bloat apps, keeping them from showing in the app drawer. Permanent root drops when I'm sitting waiting for traffic court, and within 20 minutes I'm rooted and can use Root Explorer to delete what I don't want. Slap ADW or Launcherpro on top of it and you'll never notice Espresso. Now, evil D and Zinx are dropping roms left and right, so there's plenty of choices for roms. Zinx has just about all of the CM 6.1.2 bugs shaken out, and we should start seeing some Gingerbread soon enough.
@Iceberg, I see your point on some of the bloatware, I got rid of a bunch of it myself, but hating on Wifi calling and Wifi hotspot? Yes, there's wifi tether for root users, but if its built in and still free to use, why not? And I'm not sure where you're getting your root instructions from, but check this thread out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
And check out the MT4G app section, there's ways to replace the phone and gallery. Matter of fact, the old Cooliris gallery is in the app store, you can download it there. I believe the Gingerbread launcher is still in the market as well. People have replaced the contacts app, and I have the Genius button remapped to Google Search. There is a theme that will get rid of the squares around the icons in the stock launcher. And as I said earlier, once you get perma-root, you can get rid of whatever bloat you don't want.

Nice, I feel really solid on my last statement though, how this is a Tmobile phone not an Android phone personally (but we all know root changes everything thankfully).

But I am trying to root my device permanently, though I've yet to go through the process of using ADB.

Someone over at xda gave me a easier to follow method, but when I'm in terminal after I give the directory to the root folder on my CD card, the sh command isn't working which is the last terminal script.

So I've reset my phone, and I'm going to try it again before going into ADB.

I'm keeping at it, I remember sims boasting how easy it was to root the devices, but then again that was after they started being coded like this.

My buddy is telling me

1. download visionary, root.zip from the s=on s=off guide. its in the middle of android development section of mytouch 4g.

unzip the root.zip and place the folder on your sd card

2. download android terminal emulator from the market

3. go to setting -> application-> turn off fastboot
go to setting -> application-> development -> turn on USB debugging

4. open visionary and click temp root. you will get black screen, dont freak out, give a min (make sure r/w is checked on)

5. open android terminal emulator
type in "su" then click entet (without " mark)
it will probably say permission is denied
type in "su" again, then click enter
supper user will pop up asking for permission click "allow"
type in "cd /sdcard/root" then click enter
type in "sh root.sh" then click enter
give a min or two when it says turn off and go into recovery to check if s is on or off, exit out of emulator

6. turn off the phone, then reboot into hboot by holding volume down and power button

7. it should say S=OFF
now using your volumebutton and power button
navigate to fastboot then reboot

8. when it reboot go to visionary again and click permenant root
it will reboot your phone

but I can't get the sh command to work,
maybe because I'm using winwrar? and am extracting instead of unzipping the file? (not that there is an unzip option when I right click)

For me, I had to do a couple of reboots to get it sticking. Here's what I did, following grankin01's thread:
Download root.rar - http://www.mediafire.com/?flit79p2y069bb3
md5sum: 46361b0cc8652d88688c0ab66d44950b

This is a bit revised since the first time I did it, makes it a bit easier. My replacement MT4G I had rooted in about 5 minutes using the Terminal method. And you are right about one thing, this is more a T-Mobile phone than an Android phone, but after rooting, you get to take out all you don't need, then all is right with the world. Once you get rid of all the bloat, you'll see just how good a phone this is.

so the phone ships 4gb of storage, but only 1 gig or so of room for the user to install apps.

rooting to where i can use root explorer to delete useless demo's and other stupid stuff..will give me back more of the 4gb than just the 1gb?

Now my question with that is, i read on xda someone explained that they did the format this way, because the 3gb you can't access is used as sort of a "cache" so things open faster and what not. now..i don't really see how that applies. so will i gain more room too install items as i see fit without hindering speed?

also, i played with one of these in the store and i downloaded launcher pro to see how well i liked it since i'm an ADW fan. and it seemed pretty smooth and flawless with the 3d draw and everything..so as far as replacing the launcher goes well that issue has been fixed so i can take that off the list of things to do lol.

seriously considering getting this phone in the next 1-2 days but i wanna make sure i can get it how i like it.

thanks for the input so far

Welp, I couldn't get ADB to recognize my device through the command prompt, and I'm kind of laughing since this all happened with my G1 and I waited till I could do it all from my device.

Aye.
This is always fun.
