2D to 3D?

I see the latest in the Harry Potter saga, Deathly Hallows is to be released in 2D not 3D as hoped. I guess it was filmed in 2D so tricking it up to 3D would be too costly. I'm wondering if any 2D movie can be doctored to become 3D without re shooting? Any ideas?
 
Several movies shot in 2D have been converted post-production...Clash of the Titans, Alice in Wonderland, Piranha...

Other than Avatar & RE Afterlife, I don't think that many 3D movies were actually shot in 3D.

Some conversions aren't too bad, some are shitty rush jobs.

With Harry Potter the conversion was apparently going to take too long to be ready in time.
 
I'm sure they have to manually mark each element and its depth by hand, a bit like rotoscoping. In any case expensive..slow and quality is varied.
