2011 Cricket Android and Tablet Q1 2011

So from what I am seeing tonight, it looks like Cricket is coming out with another Android 2.1 smart phone and an Android 2.2 powered tablet in February 2011. Both seem like really cool options. My local dealer let it slip about two weeks ago that Cricket is coming out with another Huwaei. (She couldn't remeraber the name but she said something about 750 which seems to be an older Huwaei. Can any dealers confirm or deny this announcement?) I'm still trying to avoid jumping on the Ascend bandwagon because I am holding out for CES in case the new phone gets a keyboard. So what do you guys think the new phone will be? Another Huwaei? The 2.1 version of the Zio? Something different altogether? On a side note, I wish it was that Huwaei Ideos X6. How bad *** would it be for Cricket to hit the market with a 4.1" screened, 2.2 Froyo powered smart phone for under 300 bucks???

Thread moved to the PDA discussions sense it is discussing PDA's. I have avoided jumping on any cricket branded device, never had one "always flashed my own" I have heard of another Huwaei also heard the 2.1 upgrade for the Zio "but that's software not hardware." 6 months ago I would have said keep dreaming, but who knows now.

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but the huawei m750 is not an android, it's not even going to be a 3g phone. it will be a basic low end touch screen. this is not a guess I have seen the specs

From PC Mag.com: Cricket's New Smartphones from Huawei and LG: HanRAB-On
Budget carrier Cricket has an aggressive smartphone lineup for 2011. We checked some of them out.

CES 2011

LAS VEGAS?The world is turning towarRAB smartphones, and low-cost wireless carrier Cricket is turning with it. Cricket showed me new Android-powered phones from Huawei and LG, a Viewsonic tablet, and a new Samsung texting phone coming to the carrier later this year.

As a low-cost, prepaid carrier, Cricket had to wait for smartphone prices to come down before it could fully participate in the smartphone revolution, vice president and general manager of devices Matt Stoiber said. But affordable Android phones are now the norm, and Cricket's customers are demanding them, he said. Cricket's Android service plan runs only $55/month, less than the major carriers charge.

The LG Optimus is coming to Cricket during the first quarter of this year, Stoiber said. Cricket's version of the Optimus is just like the hot-selling Optimus for Sprint, T-Mobile, and MetroPCS: a perfectly finished, beautifully performing low-end Android phone that has similar specs to other affordable phones, yet somehow feels smoother than they do. Cricket's version is silver, with a 3.2-inch, 320x480 screen and a 3.2-megapixel camera. It's going to be more expensive than the $129 Huawei Ascend, Stoiber said, but I know that I'll be recommending people spend the extra cash.

A little later in the year comes the Huawei X5, which I saw at Huawei's booth earlier this week. This Android phone will replace the Ascend with "similar retail pricing," Stoiber said. If that means consumers are getting an 800Mhz smartphone with a 5-megapixel camera for $129, that's going to be a stellar deal. When I handled the X5, I was more impressed by Huawei's upcoming higher-tier U9000. But if the X5 comes in below the Optimus on price, Cricket users are going to have an interesting choice between Huawei's better specs and LG's reliable finish.

I didn't see this next smartphone, but Cricket plans to carry a Samsung Android phone with a 3.2-inch screen within the next few months as well, Stoiber said.

"Smartphones will be a good, better, best scenario," he said. Stoiber also pulled out a dual-core, Viewsonic Android tablet that the carrier will be bundling with a Wi-Fi hotspot. The tablet will be Wi-Fi only ? you have to use it with the hotspot. That's because Cricket wanted to bring the tablet to market quickly, Stoiber said. The tablet uses a 1.2Ghz dual-core Qualcomm processor and will run the Android 2.3 "Gingerbread" OS, not the recently announced "Honeycorab" tablet OS. The tablet has a 1024x600 screen and will have a 3-megapixel camera, Stoiber said.

Other new Cricket phones for the first quarter include the sub-$99 Pinger 3 (no, there was no Pinger 1 or 2), a classy, BlackBerry-like texting phone from Samsung, and a simple flip phone from Kyocera. Cricket will have two simple clamshell phones and a bar phone for sale at all times, although the carrier's focus now is on texting and smart phones.

I also got an update on some other Cricket products. The carrier's groundbreaking Muve Music service?which is as close as we're going to get to Spotify in the US, at least for now?is going to appear only on the Samsung Suede for a few months, and then will come to at least one Android phone by midyear. Cricket will be able to upgrade at least some existing Android phones with Muve.

Speaking of upgrades, the Sanyo Zio?which runs an unforgivably old version 1.6 of Android?will get a boost to 2.2 soon, Stoiber said.

Looking forward, Cricket is definitely heading towarRAB 4G LTE. While the carrier won't introduce LTE until later this year, they're already thinking about what kinRAB of smartphones and service they want to offer?maybe phones with bigger screens and streaming media, Stoiber said. The "cost curve" of LTE phones is coming down faster than expected, which is speeding up Cricket's LTE efforts, he said.

Cricket, the nation's seventh-largest carrier, currently has about 5.4 million customers.

AWESOME!! Just the info I was looking for. So the Optimus worth a ****? I knew when that X5 came out without an announced carrier that Cricket would get it. It seems to be a decent phone as well...hmmmm

So do you think the X5 would be worth waiting on then? I like the idea of the 800MHZ processor and a 5mp camera. Most of the reviews I have read on the Optimus seem to say it's a hell of a phone for the price point. I'm carrying a Samsung R550 right now so any Android is better than no Android. I guess it all depenRAB on where the Optimus falls price wise. Any word yet on pricing or release date of either phone?

yea i sorta glanced right over the x5. looking at the specs its definitely not a bad phone, it will be a much needed upgrade to their android lineup, but you nailed it on the head, i would wait for the price point to be released.

but the x5 is missing a few things that you could get on a used evo, for instance, 4g and hdmi out(which soon you will be able to plug into your tv and watch videos and play video games, or bluetooth pair wiimote and play roms). just like normal computers, you want to try to future proof your purchases as much as possible, when cricket rolls out 4g, the first people to have it are all the people who have flashed 4g phones over. if you buy a 3g-only phone now, you will just end up having to buy another phone pretty soon.

like i said above, on paper the zio & ascend are just as fast as the optimus s. and im sure on a daily basis it would function, but you will probably see some screen laging and some latency issues. if you want a phone that can run all apps, and will perform faster in real life, look at the core specs before you buy it, and make sure that there is a significant increase. i guess they basically need to just release a 1ghz phone, that will run anything you throw at it, within reason.

i personally bought a used evo 4g on craigslist for around $250 about 6 months ago, i couldn't be happier with this phone. just like my last 2 windows mobile phones, i will probably be using the evo for the next 2-4 years. if you were around during the winmo days, hopefully you see that the android os is very utilitarian just like winmo. although it wasnt as pretty, winmo had all the same feature sets if not more than the iphone. android is very similar, im not sure android apps will ever been as nice/elegant as iphone apps. dual-core is another feature that may prove a need, but so far even on 1ghz, for all my widgets/shortcuts/processes, im sure i still under utilize the potential of on a daily basis. i hate to say it, but it seems that the innovation for mobile is coming from apple devs. but then once we see what they can do, android devs can usually one up them with the core features.

as for the tablet, again the hardware specs are awesome, and as long as cricket ships an ota honeycorab update i have no issues. but if they don't, they will basically have sold a paperweight. you can also flash a samsung galaxy tab over to cricket if you want.

buy smarter and less often!

strangely enough, even though its confirmed, all my research shows that the huawei ideos x5 is a gsm only phone, at least for now.

The ideos looks nice and it has to be better than my ascend. lol I still want my EVO but all this talk in other threaRAB about cricket not allowing flashed phones worries me. I dont wanna spend the cash and not be able to use the phone. Now I know i could resell it, but thats not the point.

I guess I am just weary of flashed phones because of all the bugs guys seem to have on here with them. I am computer illiterate so if something didnt work on the phone I would be scewed. My biggest thing is the roaming though. I travel to other Cricket AWS markets all the time and its nice to use my phone and not sap up roaming minutes. As I understand it, if I leave Chattanooga and go to Atlanta, my phone will be roaming regardless instead of being in network. That could get expensive REALLY quickly.

"I saw a memo from a reliable source and thought I'd pass the info.
Although cricKet claims it to temporary, they (cricket) will be limiting all data functions on any customer provide PDA device. This also applies to upgrading plans. Yup what this means is if you take your PDA to get active cricket will simply activate the talk and text only.
The work around for the customer
Contact a dealer or someone other than cricKet corp and activate or have your plan changed or have your current device changed to a cricket brand phone. "

you can still get you phone fully flashed to cricket, you just CANNOT go to a corporate owned (really large) cricket stores to get it down, you MUST go into a either a Premier Dealer or any other small cricket dealer.

Cricket doesn't want flashed phones on their network, but as far as I know, there is NO way they can stop people from using "Customer Provided Equipment" (CPE).
