2010 Mazda 3 (sedan) or 2009 Dodge Caliber?

I'm 18 years old and looking for a car that will last me the next 7 years. I am looking at things like reliability, fuel economy, short-term and long term costs. I also want something that I can personalize or mod. If anyone owns either, really want to know how the car is in the open world (I did test drive both). Thanks
 
The caliber is a car that falls apart at about 70,000 miles. The resale value of the car is very low and the car has a lot of squeaks internally after a couple of months.

The Mazda is a much better car but is just that bit more expensive to start.
