2009 Gundam suprise?-Speculation thread

Domon: Now you stay here and watch for any sort of enemy invasion
Captain: And you're sure that this area is safe?
Garrod: Oh yeah, no prob man. Don't you know that you guys are the most useful out of all of us when it comes to scouting
Zero: Well, if you say so.
Shinn: Yeah, well see ya. (They all fly away)
Bakunetsumaru: Huh, what a couple of nice...(Blown away by enemy forces)
Shinn: They took the bait, GO GO GO!
Domon: Man this plan was awesome
Captain: My...legs...

You might be right, but I always thought there had to be something more to Newtypes. In Tomino's earlier Gundam series Newtypes seemed to be there to try and end war, through moments of brief understanding between Newtype pilots. Then by V Gundam they had become straight up weapons of war. I'd like to see why they made jump, and whether or not they were meant for something more, or if they were simply an evolutionary bi-product of humanity entering space.

But really, your probably right, since I don't think even Tomino knows or cares about the answers to these questions.

Yas has been tied with Gundam just as long as Tomino, has directing experience, and is a better storyteller, IMO. I think he'd be an excellent choice to helm the project.

I think back when Gundam was just going to be a single series, Tomino perhaps intended to leave it up to the imagination of the audience. In a way, it was Newtypes who defeated the Zabis/Zeon and the question was there, would humanity now move on to enlightened peace? However, as he kept getting asked to do more and more Gundam he partly took his anger out on the story by removing the hopefulness of Newtypes and instead casting them as a few flukes that got rarer and rarer.

The last I heard, he changed his view on Newtypes. He now says all humans are born as them but over time we lose it as we accept the suppoed truths are elders teach us and we lose faith in life. Thus, true Newtypes are those who can look beyond these trappings and see the true potential of humanity and the universe.

You know, considering the success of Code Geass, the "Sakura as Nu Gundam" picture, the fact that a female character designer worked on Gundam 00, I would not be surprised if the next Gundam had character designs from CLAMP.

I agree, and honestly I never really liked Transformers, and more or less, Gundam is to Japan what Star Wars and Star Trek are to North America, just like Lupin III is to Japan, what James Bond is to North America, and also let's not forget the crew of Cyborg 009 is to Japan, what the Justice League is to North America

I wouldn't mind CLAMP in Gundam, so long as there was some diversity. Gundam 00 marked the successful return of the "pretty" Gundam pilot already, I just wouldn't want everybody being thin and looking super young. However, even in Geass there are good examples of strong military types. Cornelia (season one), Guilford, and especially Todoh. So it can work, we just wouldn't want five Lelouch types running around.

So yeah, they could be a great asset. Of course, Yun Kouga shows the benefits of picking a talented artist out of nowhere too. I had no idea who Kouga was before 00, but the art's been spectacular.

Not out of nowhere really - she'd been doing shonen-ai stuff for nearly two decades and had been very popular doing it (Loveless, Earthian.) Her name recognition outside of that scene was nearly nil (especially outside of Japan,) but other artists (including animators) knew of her stuff for a while. It was more of a gutsy move to pick someone known for doing shonen-ai works to design for a franchise with such a predominantly male fanbase.

Aye, this was mostly what I had in mind, though Loveless was the only title of Kouga's I'd ever heard of when I looked over a list of her work way back--if Earthian is a notable work, I didn't know it. My lack of awareness about her work led me to think that she was mostly unknown, but based on what you're saying it seems not.

I don't think G Gundam neeRAB a sequel, personally. I think it works best as a stand alone series, plus I doubt well over a decade later we'd see the same energy or direction given to a sequel. G Gundam has that rare, right kind of crazy that's so hard to perfect
