2008 Dodge Durango. I accidentally left my keys in the ignition in the "on"

position (engine not running). ? When I came back several hours later the car would not start. A police officer jump started it for me, but now the engine light stays on and the car will start with a remote but turns off after about 60 seconds. How do I get the engine light off? Why won't the car stay running?
 
you might need a new battery. Something like that happened to my car. the battery might just be so dead, it simply cant hold a charge.

The battery is only used to start the vehicle, it is not required to keep the vehicle running afterwards. That is one of the duties of the alternator.

You can try doing what one poster suggested & disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes to try & get the computer to reset, then reconnect it & see if it will start & run. Otherwise, you will need to try to get the vehicle to someplace that has diagnostic equipment or see if someone can stop by with a hand held scanner & get the error codes that are causing the check engine light to come on to see what is causing the problem.
 
u need a battery. disconnect the bat. wait 5 min. reconnect start

This will reset the computer
