clone trooper C-17

I am a very young college student and a car new buyer. I saw these cars on craigslist, a 06 toyota corolla S with 53k and its a manual with 1.8engine, then saw an 05 honda civic lx with 58k and automatic with 1.7engine. Now I've heard manuals are more faster and cheaper on gas. My question is which one would be better? as in quality, speed and just overall better?
