2006 Suzuki C50 oil change

Guys.
I've seen a thread on Suzuki oil change but it didn't address the fact that the manual states that oil changes should be changed every 600mi. Am I reading it correctly? On page 7-4 of the VL800 owners manual the chart states "R" for oil and oil filter change on every 600 miles. Anybody see what I'm seeing? This is my first bike and I want to treat her right. I took it in for the initial breakin at 741 mi and now I'm at 1300. Should I change the oil?

You are "reading" it OK, just not understanding it properly.

The 600 column is things you should do AT 600 miles.
The next column is things that you should do AT THAT mileage....maybe 3000.
The next col. is things you should do AT THAT mileage.......maybe 6000.

The recommendations don't revert to "every xxxx miles" until after you run out of columns in the book, after something like 30,000 miles or so.

Clearer ?? :bluethum:

Hey thanks a lot ER.....I got it now. You saved me some money. While I have your attention, another question. Is Mobil 1 synthetic oil ok? The manual says to use Suzuki oil, but I've read somewhere that Mobil 1 is better.

Aargh. That's a question with much debate. Search "synthetic" for all you can swallow. IMO, yes, as long as you stick with the correct weight (or slightly heavier, depending on availability).

Stanley,

Greetings from a fellow 06' C50 owner! I have 13K on mine and it's still running strong. I didn't switch to synthetic until 6k. My thought was that I didn't want to swap regular for synthetic until it was well past break in. I did switch to Mobil 1, and if you do, just make sure it is the motorcycle oil marked as 4T. My reason for switching to synthetic was because I herd that it reduced the "clunking" sound when shifting. It made a big difference!

I went to Walmart and got Mobile 1. I didn't realize the different versions. So I'm looking at what I bought now and it's the High Mileage. For engines with over 75K miles. It's 10W-40 Fully Synthetic. Can I use it?

Don't know. I "think" that the only difference in high mileage versions is some kind of chemical to swell the valve guide seals to stop oil loss via the valves.

That might not be good for a new engine since it might make the seals wear faster than normal.

I think I'd change it for the MX4T stuff or the synthetic Rotella that lots of (x)50 users seem to like.

Mobile one is for cars.Get a synthetic formulated for motorcycle use.I use Amsoil.Royal Purple is good too.If you want to read up on synthetics go to bobistheoilguy.com

Ahem.....Mobil makes a version of Mobil 1 that IS specifically formulated for motorcycles.
I think we covered that at least once already in this thread.

However.......

I have seen and heard of LOTS and lots of riders who use auto or diesel synthetics in their bikes and don't remember EVER seeing anyone describe an actual failure.............except for the few who used the "energy conserving" varietys and had clutch trouble.

Think we covered that too.
