Of the two, I would choose the Honda. While Volkswagen makes an excellent car, the repair costs will nail you in the end. They are both going to be fun to drive, and both are about as convenient as the other. I also tend to like the interior of the Honda's better because they feel more personal.
Test both of them, and see which one you would rather be in for a long period of time.
