I called a dealership and the area. The mechanic was an honest guy. He zeroed in on the VSC with The Check Engine light as a problem with the gas cap not being seated correctly. He told me to reseat it and wait (maybe as long as a week) but it should go out. Sure enough, later that day it went out. I can see this as an opportunity (scam) by toyota to charge for a repair not needed. If you look in the manual. Both lights tell you to see your dealer immediately. He did say that it could be something more serious but if the car is driving the same as before, its unlikely it is a severe problem.
