2005 Toyota Corolla Maintenence Required?

2005 Toyota Corolla Maintenence Required light is on my car... My boyfriend is a mechanic and he can't figure out how to get the light off without me having the original owners manual. He hooked it up to a 'coder' and it said "maitenence required". He unplugged the battery and let it sit and it still has the maitenence light. Any tips, suggestions, knowledge!

Reset trip A to 0.0 and then cycle back to the mileage, turn the key to off, press and hold the button in, turn the ignition to on without starting the car and the mileage should turn to dashes. They will disappear then will read 00000 then when the miles return you are all set.
 
with the ignition off. push in the odometer trip reset button and hold(don't let go) then while still holding in the button turn the ignition to the run position (do not start the car) and hold the button in for about 10 sec. watch the odometer while doing this. a bunch of lines should blink and then 000000000 should read then light is reset.
