2005 Toyota Corolla LE: What is a hub binding?

I have spent a small fortune trying to get a creaking and rubbing noise to stop from the right front of my car. Local mechanics replaced the "hub bearing and the hub binding" at a significant cost, about $300.

I still had the noise.

I eventually took the car to a previous mechanic who lives out of town. He replaced the hub and the hub bearing, and the noise is gone. The hub was bent, because the car's right front had been in a wreck (or hit a curb hard) before I got it.

I have never heard of a hub binding. Also, it seems that the previous mechanics would have noticed a bent hub and replaced it.

I'd appreciate comments.
