I was driving the car and it started making an odd noise (almost a whirling sound i suppose?). I parked for a while at my college and when i came back the power steering was not working. It was incredibly hard to turn which is what leads me to believe this. The battery and parking break light were on and would not turn off. I parked for a while to ask for advice on whether to drive it home or what to do. when i turned back on the car the lights were dimmer than before. I started the drive home and than the speedometer stopped working. I barely made it home and now the car will not start. Any ideas whats wrong with it? Is it possible that the alternator went and this cause the power steering? are they two different problem or...? Please help! Im just your average poor college kid and i cannot really afford to bring it in and tell them to do whatever

Sound like your alternator died, your car was running on battery for a while, after that battery was drained and everything is dead. Get your alternator tested, if your battery is in good shape it can be recharged, often a bad alternator will kill a battery though.

I think that the car's belts are worn out. If they are making a shrieking noise, have them replaced. It's good to have it towed to a mechanic. Belts are the main source of energy production for the cars. Inspect the car and do some maintenance before its too late.
